I'm in So nice to get to chat with other quilters and hear about your projects. I'm currently working on a pillow with a Double Wedding Ring block using the Quiltsmart method. I'm doing it in gold fabrics so that I can give it to my brother and sister-in-law who are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in September.

I did work on my QOV blocks today. I had to rip out 3 times - to get the seams/points to match.
I did buy a new seam ripper along with the magnetic seam guide - BUT - I found out that it shouldn't be used with an electronic machine - and that's what I have - though it is 10 years old.
So - I am working real hard to keep my 1/4-inch seam uniform.
And thank you, Tarragon, for getting this Thread going for me.

graylady - I also heard that the magnetic seam guide shouldn't be used with an electronic machine. But I've been using it with my computerized machine for well over a year with no problems. I do admit that if I take it off my sewing machine, I make sure to place it away from the part of the machine with the computer. There are lots of low tech ways to get a good 1/4 inch seam such as putting a strip of painter's tape to the right of your presser foot at the 1/4 inch mark. Others have suggested putting several small sticky notes at that place too (just use enough of them to have a lip so your fabric bumps up against). Several of the sewing/quilt companies like Nancy's Notions, Connecting Threads and Keepsake quilting also have some tools for a 1/4 inch seam. Good luck with your QOV quilt

I am currently hand quilting a quilt and some of the seams keep popping open. I have never had this happen before!
Nice to be able to connect with other quilters!

Hi woodside: Yes, I like having a spot for quilters to chat a bit.
Hand-quilting is quite an art and an accomplshment. I know that I won't ever handquilt anything - but I love quilts that have been hand-quilted. I'm surious as to how you mark the design - and what color/type of thread you use - and how do you keep the stitches even - and how long have you been hand-quilting?

Happy to see a Quilter's Thread! I'm mostly self-taught, went to some classes decades ago and learned the basics (the hard way....templates, hand piecing). Have moved on up to mostly machine quilting, all machine piecing, puchased an accu-quilt cutter, have lots of DVD's, love paper piecing. Time restraints have prevented me from enjoying my hobby; plus no family or friends share my interest.
Would love to follow you all along. At the moment I only have two UFO's, a wall hanging and a scrap quilt.
I wanted to change my avatar to a photo of a block on a bedspread....it was at a resort we stayed at, but my photos are too "large". I'll figure it out.
I saw someone was having a hard time with 1/4 inch seams? I have an old fashioned thing that screws onto my throat plate.

I'm living (reading) vicariously through you guys. I miss quilting and sewing, but with a 4-month old, it's just not happening anytime soon!

I'm living (reading) vicariously through you guys. I miss quilting and sewing, but with a 4-month old, it's just not happening anytime soon! I started my first sampler quilt when my DS was 5 years old, he picked the patterns and colors he liked. I finished it when he started college. Talk about not having time!! However, when I did a quilt for DD, 3 years younger, I started it while she was in college and was able to give it to her when she graduated. When I could not enjoy my love of quilting, I kept up with the trends by having some magazines delivered and buying some books now and then. To this day, my favorite magazine is Quiltmaker. It is the only magazine I still receive, of any kind. Enjoy your time with your 4-month old. Just make sure you carve out some time for yourself each day, even just a few minutes to glance through a magazine or jot down ideas for future sewing projects. Your 4-month old will be in preschool before you know it....although I am sure right now you are more concerned about getting enough sleep.

I handquilted a king sized Hawaiian quilt for my son and his wife when they got married in Hawaii. Never again will I handquilt anything! I used a leather thimble because I just couldn't get the hang of a metal thimble, but even so I developed a nasty wart on that fingertip because it was continually being jabbed for over a year. It's taken me 4 years to get rid of the wart. (Last resort was superglue, which suffocated the wart and it went away! Yippee)

What? There's a quilters thread? How long has this been going on? My peeps!
On the topic of a quarter inch seam, I too have heard of stacking up post-it's or tape. Also, someone mentioned to me the other day that we should all periodically check our quarter inch feet. You know how they have that knife blade that sticks out (mine does, anyway)? That can get bent over time. It probably wouldn't be enough to make a difference unless you made some blocks a few years back and made more now or something. But, it's probably worth checking and something I never would have thought of.
As for what I'm working on now, I'm trying to get an art quilt done. It has to be finished in the next two weeks for a local show deadline. It's all hand appliqued but machine quilted. The quilting is about half done, so if my machine cooperates I think I'll be fine, it's only 30x36" or so.

Want to see the last quilt I finished? This is me at my baby shower earlier this year. It's my baby's first quilt (I took it to the shower to show my aunt).

It's so nice to see all the quilters posting I admire all of you who do handquilting. I have a few projects I need to finish hand quilting. I also like to do redwork. lydiaeatworld - what a beautiful baby quilt! I love the little prairie points inner border

So nice to see that cute baby quilt. Even "I" could do a quilt like that.
But - I'm way behind my schedule for my QOV (Quilt of Valor) which I'm making for my son - a 50-year-old single man - who is a veteran - 10 years in active service with the U. S. Navy and 10 year - Reserves. He was on a ship during Desert Storm - and later on, he was on a ship in the Adriatic during the Croatian/Serbian war. (My family comes from Croatia - and my father was still alive during that horrible war - but he was so proud of his grand son.)
Anyway, I love hearing from all the quilters. I wish we had "like" button on here - like on Facebook.
The QOV that I'm making is from a design by Fons and Porter.

Lydia, that is a beautiful quilt. I love the secondary pattern you can see. I need to figure out how to get a picture posted, just haven't had time to really explore the probards yet. I did a pinwheel quilt using a paper piecing method. And I love playing around with my EQ7....so many quilts, so little time!
Graylady, sounds like you have an interesting family background.

For all you machine quilters (using your domestic sewing machine), do any of you have/use either of these products: - Sew Slip Multi Purpose Sheet - Sew Steady Table I'm just starting to learn machine quilting and both of these look like they might be helpful. Thanks for any thoughts from those who might have used them

I'm making a denim circle rag quilt for my brother. I made him a traditional cotton quilt some years back, and he managed to destroy it somehow. So, I figure denim should stand a fighting chance. This is what it will look like:

Wow so happy To find a quilting thread. I've got lots of fabric, a beautiful sewing room and not much time. But you ladies are inspiring me. I see and quilt on an almost 40 year old kenmore machine. The motor is strong and the stitches even so I can't justify the new machine.

I found the "like" button - yay!
I, too, have so little time it seems. But - today - I have a whole free day - so I'm about to enter my sewing room.
Will let you know how many blocks I manage to get done today.
We've made our reservations for mid-October to visit our son. So - that's my goal - to have it ready by then. I may be wishfully thinking. Maybe, if I have the top done - and I show it to him - then quilt it later.
We'll see.

alfa - that's an interesting quilt, I've never seen that pattern done in denim. It's great to hear everyone working on projects I finished the top half of the Double Wedding Ring Pillow today, so I just need to cut the bottom and put it together. It's a really big pillow 24x24.

Hello. I have been quilting for about 40 years, mostly hand quilting, but also very simple home machine quilting. I'm going to the quilt show in Grand Rapids next week & taking a class in machine quilting. My latest project was a couple of weeks ago--twin size & totally from my stash. No new fabric purchased but I do have to buy backing. Can someone tell me how to share a photo here?

Sounds like I need a project. Well I certainly have tons of fabric to choose from. I am going to commit to picking a project today. It's going to storm later on so I think it's a sign to start a quilt!

I worked on the quilt today - making another block - and working on my 1/4-inch seam - it's getting better.
I also need to make sure that I cut all the pieces exactly the same size - if the original piece isn't right - then the block won't be right either - even if the 1/4-inch seam is correct.
I'm making sure I press the seams in the correct direction so that I can nestle seams together.

I expect to find inspiration for a new project or two at the quilt show. I have never been good about labeling my quilts, so that is a small project I'm working on. I will have to borrow back a few to get it accomplished.

As you can see, Joan, I'm a new quilter - having taken lessons about 10 years ago - making about 3 projects - and then - nothing.
I've restarted - so that I can at least make one quilt for each of my 3 children before I die.
I love quilt shows at the fairs - and other shows. I derive inspiration from seeing the beautiful work done by all of you able and proficient quilters.
The last couple of days, I've spent a lot of time trying to standardize my piecing - and getting the block for this quilt to come out the same size - without too many glaring errors. My DH keeps reminding me that no one else will ever notice a seam not just right here and there.
I've got to keep moving on this quilt - so I'm trying to speed things up.
I devised a system so that I've numbered the rows and assigned letters - and then each block gets a small note attached as to which way a particular triangle must point, etc...
Then, setting these blocks with the lattice - is another difficulty - too many small pieces. And I'm not sure of the sequence.
Any ideas?
