What’s on your mind – how to make kugel? This week’s Torah reading? Life goals? Prayer? We are all engaged in weight loss/weight maintenance journeys and we are all Jewish or at least interested in Judaism. We like to eat, we like to discuss. It is our goal here to provide each other support on our journeys, to share experiences, to call on our rich cultural heritage and texts, and to help each other grow spiritually.
Some of us take weekly turns starting the thread:

Boker Tov All! We are talking about abundance this week -different types/kinds of abundance. (We'll get back to the abundance that hampers later in the week.)
Today I would like to talk about intellectual abundance. September - and all the children go back to school. And adults head to college/university. And sometimes we feel a need to do some "informal" learning - no actual classroom, no schedule for studies, just something that piques our interest and we feel we must pursue. (Speaking of which, Nat.Geo channel has a series on "Draining the Oceans" - very interesting!)
The last doctor I had always gave me assigned reading - always 1 or 2 books on some vitamin, supplement, dietary ideas, etc. I always felt like she was offering me information I could take or leave - at my own pace. (I do miss her - she took another job & I got another doctor.) Speaking of which - I find it very difficult to get rid of books. One never knows when one will need to look something up!
My dad (z'l) used to say, "There is no advantage to remaining ignorant!" He was correct in his thinking. I'm finding as I get older, I enjoy and appreciate knowledge & learning more and more. Things fall together in my mind, find other connections, and suddenly history or politics makes sense. (ok, not politics this time around!)
Not everything I am learning will have practical applications. (I can't imagine ever having to know what the seafloor looks like!) Just getting to learn is a privilege!
Any "new" knowledge making its way to you lately?

Hi everyone,
Funny you should ask, Angelika. I just finished reading a really interesting article on insomnia in yesterday's NY Times online. Really relevant to me, and I'm happy to email the article to anyone who is interested.
I ALWAYS want to learn new things. I started taking a Jewish ethics class at my Shul last year. It meets once a week, except in the summer. I love it, but don't feel horrible about missing when something comes up.
I have a strong desire to learn to read Hebrew better, and I want to get moving with year.
Lee, I am so happy for your DS!
Peachy, just read your post from yesterday. Very lovely idea about the empty chair! Your daughter and future DDIL sound very lovely and thoughtful! I planned a wedding for my daughter (with her help of course) and loved the process. It was a creative process and DD and I had fun with it. We once spent at least half an hour discussing whether a ribbon around some flower vase would look better tied in a bow at a square knot. Silly, but.... Fun! (She and I are usually MUCH too pragmatic for a ribbon discussion!)
Have a good day, all.

Good morning everybody. Today I am doing six loads of laundry, including DS's new work pants, making important phone calls and getting/sending important emails. I also have to clean the kitchen since I was too busy yesterday and it is a mess. Busy day today, and I feel good!
Latest news re DS: He has his job orientation on Wednesday, and may start work as soon as Thursday! We are very, very excited.
That's what's filling my brain lately, so I hope that answers today's question! I'll have more to talk about soon, but right now I am completely engrossed in my daily life.
I'll check back in later. Have a peaceful day, Lee

Books? You want to know about books? In the office (where I'm sitting right now), behind me are two bookcases about 6 feet tall and each about 3 feet wide. Many of the shelves have books two deep (that is, a row of books in front of another row of books). The top of the bookcase is totally covered with books. On the other side of the door is one additional bookcase with the same situation, some shelves have books two deep and the top of the bookcase is totally covered with books. On the couch across from it are miscellaneous items, including more books... Downstairs are larger bookcases, all completely filled with books, some shelves having books two deep, plus there are some boxes of books that somehow no longer fit into the bookcases... And there's one short wide bookcase on the landing of the staircase, you got it, completely filled with books, including across the top, and some sections are two deep... And I haven't mentioned the stacks of books on the kitchen counter or on the dining room table... Think maybe I have some books here?
I just spent approximately three hours (or possibly more time) researching (in books here in my office and also online) and writing a lesson (and lesson plan) for a 45-minute class I thought I was teaching this coming Saturday morning (it turns out I don't have to teach it until a few more weeks from now). Talk about intellectual abundance! Anyone want to know about the Abayudaya from Uganda? Or Sandy Koufax's decision not to pitch the opening game of the World Series in 1965? K'lal Yisrael / Kol Yisrael Arevim Zeh baZeh is the subject matter for that class... Just ask... I probably have the answers in this room...

I want to get myself reading the newspaper more or in other ways keeping more abreast of things, but I don't see that happening real soon (sorry). Right now have started studying my torah readings for RH and need to review ma'ariv - leading 2nd night (for which attendance is tiny).
About today - block I work on was closed off. Was able to get to the office with ID and police escort to the door. My building has one big window that was shattered, but that's it. Block is closed off because they are still examining debris for evidence.

How about a good novel - anyone got a good book? Have read another dozen or so detective stories (Lee, have read about 5 of those Holmes/Russell books; liked them a lot). Read "Bove" which was a nice read. Else?

Louise, first, yes, I just read a wonderful book called "A Man Called Ove," by Fredrik Backman. It's a delightful story of a man who misses his wife. I loved it. Also, "The Time Keeper," by Mitch Albom. That's not a new book; I read it some time ago, but I just gave it to DH for his birthday last month, and now I've fallen in love with it all over again.
Ah, learning, books, learning and books. I love to learn, I love to read, I love to discuss what I've learned and read, so I can gain more insight and more dimensions of understanding from other people's perspectives as well as my own. One book I read recently is "The Muslim Next Door: The Qur'an, the Media, and That Veil Thing," by Sumbul Ali-Karamali. It is absolutely fascinating, quite an eye-opener, and I have to admit it blew a lot of my own prejudices out of the closet. I highly recommend it. The author is well educated, very knowledgeable, and she's got a sense of humor too. She even mentions Star Trek! I thought it was so good that I'm buying it for my sisters as gifts. It's a very interesting read.
I'll BBL -- the crock pot has been soaking and I need to go wash it and finish up in the kitchen.

Hi there, I'm up in the middle of the night as usual, and just wanted to say that I have more bookcases than I can remember right now. Every room except the bathrooms has books, books, and more books. At some point, I will cull but I hate to do it. As Holly said, who knows when you will need a particular book?
Have a peaceful night, Lee
