What’s on your mind – how to make kugel? This week’s Torah reading? Life goals? Prayer? We are all engaged in weight loss/weight maintenance journeys and we are all Jewish or at least interested in Judaism. We like to eat, we like to discuss. It is our goal here to provide each other support on our journeys, to share experiences, to call on our rich cultural heritage and texts, and to help each other grow spiritually.
Some of us take weekly turns starting the thread:

Boker Tov All! I just got finished reading everyone's "book-learning" discussion yesterday! I loved it! (I took my mom out yesterday, then I had another eye appointment & was unable to see the screen - eyes dilated, AGAIN! - for most of the day) They will be calling me about cataract surgery soon. (they are scheduling 6 months out)
I'd like to talk about the abundance of the earth today. My doctor & I had the "leafy greens" for my eyes discussion - I told him I never met a leaf that I didn't like, LOL.
Part of the charm of Fall, for me, is the harvest. Trees so heavily laden, the branches are propped up with 2x4s to prevent them from breaking. Grape arbors "dripping" with ripe clusters - that are all the sweeter for having stayed on the vine until the air turns crisp. I ate my 1st fig off my tree yesterday. (I'll be making chutney soon!) Apples, pears, cabbages, odd-shaped/colored cauliflowers & broccoli. The vegetables stacked against the mirror cases in the stores look like colorful jewels - all inviting me to eat something beautiful! I realize that we are all on some sort of wt loss/wt. maintenance journey here, but I, for one, am certain that no one ever got fat from eating fruits and vegetables with no sugar or fat added.
Roasted vegetables, basted with a few drops of EVOO & some balsamic, sprinkled with pink sea salt & cracked pepper. Crockpot full of vegetables, simmered in chicken broth, until the whole house smells of hearty goodness. My idea of "vegetable soup" has always been to grab the biggest pot I can find & start tossing vegetables into it.
I took my mom some comice pears today - bright red little jewels! How have I never noticed them before? & I bought a honeycrisp apple big enough to feed 3-4 people! (they are my favorites right now) And some heirloom tomatoes - with orange & red stripes.
What foods make you wax poetic?

Good morning everybody. Hope you are all well today. It's a hazy day, not too warm yet. I'm going to be busy going food shopping, cleaning up the kitchen (which I didn't get around to yesterday), driving DS to his soft skills meeting, and so on. Re food shopping: I will certainly be buying some fall fruits and vegetables! Wegmans has a terrific produce section, and there are always items that I am unfamiliar with. I need to try more interesting things.
My latest find is "Envy" apples. They have red and yellow streaks, and are very pretty to look at. They taste sweet but not sugary, and are nice and crisp as they are in season.
I'll be back later when I have time. Have a peaceful day, Lee

Aside to Lee: I don't think I've ever seen Envy apples. I'll look for them.
I love honeycrisp apples. They were on sale for a few days last week for 99 cents a pound. I bought 4 or 5 large ones (not quite so large as the ones you found, Angelika); I've been cutting them in half, eating one and putting the other away for later. So far, DH has asked to have the half he found in the refrigerator, so in total so far, we've each eaten two half apples..
One store nearby usually has a sale on all its apples in the fall for at least one week. One year, I got honeycrisp apples (along with all the other kinds I bought) for 88 cents a pound! I couldn't believe it! I tried several kinds I hadn't eaten before and found out which ones I like and which I'm happy to leave behind... I'm an apple lover.
Must get a move on. Minyan is soon. BBL

Hi again everybody. I'm back from the supermarket but don't have to leave yet for DS's meeting, so here I am. It amazes me how easy it is to spend a LOT of money in the supermarket, even with a shopping list and trying to buy things that are reasonably priced. Anyway, I didn't get a lot of produce as we already have some but I did get salad greens for dinner tonight (we're going to have salad with turkey cut up into it, tomatoes, and Italian vinaigrette dressing), chayote squash (it's light green and looks kind of like a wrinkled pear), bananas, and mushrooms. I also got onion rolls to go with the salad. Yum, I love onion rolls.
I'll check in before bedtime to see what other "food poetry" our group has come up with. Have a peaceful rest of the day, Lee

My DH loves eggplant, and I could take it or leave it. My brother, who is a rabbi, calls eggplant the "vegetable of affliction." Definitely not a fan!
Actually I am in "mourning " because fall marks the end of nectarine and watermelon season.
What I do love are really good string beans roasted with garlic and a little olive oil. I enjoy yellow apples. I adore citrus fruits, but am not supposed to have them due to my lovely esophageal reflux.
I wish I liked more winter veggies, but this is still a project for me.

Winter veggies? I love butternut squash! I enjoy when berries are abundant (and inexpensive)and so will miss them. I'm a watermelon lover too.
Went to the pulmonologist today and she thought the cat scan looked okay; need to go back in 6 months.
