I'm just popping in to say I was so hopeful to join the discussion halfway through the week and I just haven't been able to sit down with the book after getting through about 20 pages at he beginning of the week. I'm hoping ot spend some time reading this weekend and I very much look forward to reading through everyone's comments then. I'll tag next week if necessary! <3

I haven’t read many books of this type or watched many movies of this type, but they all seem to have anarchy in common. Of course there would be the bad guys, but, as a whole, I think the human race would band together and “reinvent the wheel”. They would created settlements, learn to set up stores and trade with their neighbors. Learn to grow crops, make clothes, raise animals. They have access to libraries, old magazines (Mother Earth News anyone! 😁) and in museums they have access to wood stoves, washing-type machines, photos of ice houses to learn to persevered food. They have houses and towns that are already set up. They have older folks that remember how to do some of this. They don’t truly have to reinvent the wheel, most of its is right there for the taking. Learn how to use it. This is why it bugged me, that 20 years later, there seemed to be little to no advancement.

And just a little story that I find amusing to me. The way my mind works.
I live 30 minutes from the nearest town. 99% of the time, as I’m heading down into the valley, at least one vehicle is heading up. It might be a logging truck or two, or employees to the ski area. Seldom is there no one heading up.
But one morning, no one was going up. And I thought “Wow! What if it’s the Rapture and I’m here by myself?!” Ah! An introverts dream! As I neared the town, with the dairy farms, I realized “OMG! Those cows have to be milked! I don’t know how to milk cows! And there are HUNDREDS of cows! I’ve got to get some help! Those poor cows will get mastitis!” Luckily, about that time, I saw a car approaching to head up the hill. What a relief. To realize there were others still out there.
Because of this long-ago thought, it bugged me that people in the book hadn’t gathered chickens together, cattle, sheep, etc. That there wasn’t trading amongst themselves for meat, veggies, dairy products, furs, etc etc. I would have liked the author to have addressed this rather then the “we are still hunting deer”.
Could have still had all the adventures and bad guys but with a bit of invention tossed in.
Thanks for leading this discussion Bumble. It was fun!

I very much hope they’d find a town where people are working together and started farming and trading etc. And working on electricity and tech. Our ancestors did it by trial and error, so given that everyone in the book over 35 would have experience and memories of how all these things worked I can’t believe no one has tried again. Plus I’m sure some tech gurus must have survived somewhere too. Much to my surprise I really enjoyed this book and our discussion, thank you for leading bumblebuzz21 !

I read this so long ago and I felt hopeful, I think, but also a bit of fear for them. Maybe the new town is a closed society that won't welcome newcomers. They have talent that SHOULD be welcomed, but I don't know. Entertainment may be too trite for them. I want to be hopeful and believe in the goodness of humanity. If they are reestablished, why have hunting parties not gone out to make contact with other survivors? I just have too many questions about the future.
I did very much enjoy this book and wish my work schedule had kept me more on time with participation.

I read this about 9 months ago. Enjoyed reading through this discussion--great insights you smart readers. It made me realize that I sure have forgotten a lot of this complex book already.
