What’s on your mind – how to make kugel? This week’s Torah reading? Life goals? Prayer? We are all engaged in weight loss/weight maintenance journeys and we are all Jewish or at least interested in Judaism. We like to eat, we like to discuss. It is our goal here to provide each other support on our journeys, to share experiences, to call on our rich cultural heritage and texts, and to help each other grow spiritually.
Some of us take weekly turns starting the thread:

Boker Tov All! We've discussed changes in our diets. We've gotten ready for bad weather. So now let's discuss how changes in weather impacts our work-out routines.
Louise, I think it was last winter when you hurt yourself walking on icy sidewalks. And we're all getting very aware that our bodies simply do not "bounce back" when stuff happens anymore! So sometimes we need to take the weather into consideration.
Personally, you all know, the pool is pretty much non-negotiable. Unless I can't get out of my driveway, or the guy that opens the pool can't get out of his, I'll be there! But then there are the days when that's just not going to happen.
In my bedroom there is this lovely clothing rack that my DH hangs his coat on. I think the technical term for it is "treadmill" but it's not been used in that capacity very often! I also own a stationary bike, a balance ball, hand weights, weight bands. All of them were "necessary" at one time or another - and all of them have made it into corners of the basement or bedroom - never to be seen again!
I know people who love to work out. I am not one of them. I am my father's daughter - when he was already suffering from Alzheimer's & didn't really talk much anymore, my sister & I took him for a walk up to the top of the hill. We were ohh-ing and ahhhh-ing (the views were lovely!) - we tried to get him to appreciate them. He marched on, with his hands behind his back, muttering: It's GOOD for me.....it's GOOD for me! Yep - I just might work out because it's GOOD for me. Certainly never because I love it!
I know why I enjoy the H2Oaerobics - a bunch of ladies who get together kevtching about how we are not awake just yet, schvitzen in the pool. The gym, where I'm working on my own, is much less enjoyable. But I am determined to find either classes that I enjoy, or some other workout that I am not willing to forego!
I know that in many areas I am my own worst enemy - I start out by telling myself "I don't think I can do that." Well, what if I started to tell myself that "With a few modifications, I might be able to do that!"
I guess the 1st part is getting over the hurdle of being out there. Doing. Looking a bit nutty, out of breath & unable to keep up. Zumba, Yoga, Cardio, Body Sculpting - there are no end of classes I could try. Since I already pay for the membership, why not!
So I am making a promise to myself, to check out the classes at the gym. Some of them will not be for me. Some of them will kill me after 5 minutes. And some of them might be my new favorite workout!

Was reading this before I did my weights workout - so there's no wimping out now! I sometimes think I would like to take some kind of class but the logistics are daunting. I am not willing to drive anywhere in the evening because I won't be able to park when I get home. There are other things I could probably figure out but I have lots of DVDs that I have done at one time or another that would benefit me. The 2 things I would like to add next (besides the walking and the weight training) are fitting in 20 minutes of Turbo Jam and also some yoga stretches. First goal would be to add these once a week. I don't see this happening until after Thanksgiving, but that would be a perfect time!

Good morning everyone! It's clear and beautiful again today, but it's supposed to get up to the 80s.
I used to go to the gym in the evenings with DH, but he's been taking walks during his lunchtime and wants to watch TV in the evenings now. So I went to the gym with DS25, but he moved out in September. The other DS has no interest in the gym. I can go alone, but I don't really want to. It's not that far to the gym, and I can certainly drive there by myself, as I have many times, but I'd rather be home at night.
I've been going on DH's gazelle, and I enjoy my dance and stretching DVDs, but I get a much better workout if I go to the gym. So I'm thinking of taking advantage of the time change this weekend and going to the gym before work, like I used to do about 20 years ago. I'll just have to work out the logistics of it so I can still be ready to carpool to work with DH.
Everyone have a beautiful day!

Please forgive a post&run... When I was walking regularly, I had to stop in the heat of the summer months. Unfortunately, the women I was walking with AND I (I'm not blaming them in the least) stopped walking for some reason I've forgotten (it may very well have been the heat a year ago) and we haven't resumed yet. Maybe I'll bring it up tomorrow with them at the exercise class (where we three met in the first place).
Otherwise, I don't remember that weather was the cause of any changes in exercising...

Some forms of exercise are actually enjoyable for me. I like to walk and I like to dance. I enjoy group classes. Lately, I have been walking more, and listening to music while doing so. I just downloaded the soundtrack from "Hamilton," and listened to the first half during a one hour walk today.
I find weight training important but boring and no fun, but I make myself go to a class three times a week that emphasizes weights and weight bearing exercises like planks. Fortunately I have a good friend who also takes the class and that makes it more tolerable.
In the summer here, it is too hot and humid, in my opinion, to exercise outside, so the gym works better then. Most months between October and May are good for outside, except for the occasional really cold days, when no one down here is constitutionally equipped to deal with it.
We have a large weight machine, with pulleys and all of that nonsense in an ipstairs bedroom. I never liked it and DH has stopped using it in favor of going to the gym. I am trying to gently persuade him to put it on Craig's list.

I have little experience and no expertise in the area of exercise, so I learned a lot from everyone sharing.
Here are some suggestions I managed to glean:
Being mortally embarrassed, shvitzing buckets, huffing and puffing, not being able to keep up, and jiggling like a water balloon is not a reason not to exercise in public. Go to the gym anyway.
Telling yourself you can't do it is guaranteed to stop you from trying. Telling yourself you categorically hate exercise is not a thought pattern you want ingrained.
Elmo says, "We must do our exercise" (you should watch that episode) and any toddler knows that. It's as basic as "We must wash our hands after we flush" for the kids. We exercise because it's good for us. End of discussion. Just do it.
You can exercise at home too with DVDs or dance to music on TV if you can get out of the kitchen, or in my case, get out of bed. (Sometimes I leash Coco to the refrigerator door, like when I need to vacuum. Maybe I could teach her to growl at me every time I open it.)
It is possible to enjoy exercise. Maybe. Adding music to walking can be very helpful.
Sometimes you have to make adjustments for the weather. The gym is closed for hurricanes, earthquakes, etc. Have a plan B.
The pool is easy on your joints, although water exercise will make you wet all over. Always bring a towel if you go to the pool to exercise.
There are opportunities to exercise in the morning, during the day and at night. The gym never closes. Sometimes you can coerce, cajole or threaten a family member to join you.
If you buy large, bulky pieces of exercise equipment, you'll have something multi-functional that needs dusting. Our stationary bike is an excellent magazine holder. I put it up on Craigslist and didn't get a single response! What's a gazelle? I thought that was a zoo animal.
Kidding aside, I found your post brave, resourceful and inspiring. I too will try to exercise. I know it will make me feel better in so many ways. Hugs to you all.

HappySavta, you are the best! I love what you gleaned from all the posts so much. I totally agree with all of them. My exercise is non negotiable. When I hear people say they have no time for it that makes no sense to me. I have it scheduled exactly as I have everything else scheduled. The money I spend at the gym is well spent. I can go any time I wish. I hate to exercise, and hate it even more alone. I think I kill myself when in reality I do not. I need the push of being with other people and others telling me what to do. Is anyone looking at me? I think not. I'm certainly not looking at anyone else! I jiggle, I wiggle, I sweat, I look like a hot mess. And I don't care. I pay to go there. And I sure get my money's worth!! When I see older people with their fragile bones and inability to get out of a chair, I think how important it is to all of us to keep flexible and exercise. Including with weights. As women that's of utmost importance for us. I do not want to break bones by doing nothing as my 84 year old mother just did. I need to eat right to feed my body to keep it at its' best, whatever that is for me. And exercise for the same reason. I hate it too!!! I will never enjoy it. But I do it every day. Just my 2 cents!
