What’s on your mind – how to make kugel? This week’s Torah reading? Life goals? Prayer? We are all engaged in weight loss/weight maintenance journeys and we are all Jewish or at least interested in Judaism. We like to eat, we like to discuss. It is our goal here to provide each other support on our journeys, to share experiences, to call on our rich cultural heritage and texts, and to help each other grow spiritually.
Some of us take weekly turns starting the thread:

Boker Tov All! We were busy in the basement again - there are now piles of "yard sale" and "dump run" items. And I am counting it as exercise! I've enjoyed all your comments!
So far we've talked about food (& what we've learned about ourselves) and exercise. Today I'd like to talk about water and sleep.
I probably do not drink enough water. I don't count the coffee that I drink as part of my water consumption - if I did I probably would be drinking enough. But it always seems counterproductive to consider a diuretic as a major part of my water intake! And since it is a diuretic, I probably need even MORE water than if I didn't drink coffee. That being said, I know that even a slight bit of dehydration causes the brain to shrink (why can't it do that for my hips???!) and causes joints to work less than optimally. So for my pain levels and my thought processes, and perhaps my mental sense of well-being, perhaps it behooves me to add another full glass or 2 in there somewhere! I read someplace that for many of us, thirst registers as hunger. That could be a big part of my problem - and if the thirst is taken care of, the hunger will not be felt so intensely. Worth a try.
As to sleep - I know that I work best on 7-8 hours/night. Sleep during the day really doesn't count for me - anything longer than a 20 minute nap & my night time sleep is messed up. So, I may take a cat-nap, but I know I need my night time sleep! The other thing I have noticed - as the days are getting shorter, I seem to require more sleep. I'm waking up a full 1/2 hour later than I was when it was lighter in the AM. (that schedule will go out the window this weekend)
For me, it's difficult to go to bed at night. I get inspired, I like to write, I want to play my guitar, etc, etc, etc. When I was younger, I would peel myself away from the sewing machine at 3 AM, then go to work by 8. As I get older, my body does not allow me to get away with that. Again, joint pain is more pronounced if I don't sleep enough, and there is a definite brain fog. So - between brain fog & shrinking brain, it is best if I drink water & go to bed already!
And, all other things being equal, why wouldn't I want my body to function optimally!
I got a snootfull of dust in the basement these past 2 days - I think I need to stay up in the house & let my head clear.
Have a good day ladies!

I try to drink more water but don't usually get in the requisite 64 oz. And this could make my brain shrink and my joints hurt? That should scare some sense into me! Will renew my resolve. I don't get enough sleep either - maybe 6 hours. I tend to get very bust at midnight. Should accept this and get up later. Working on it.
My rabbi's daughter's bat mitzvah is this Shabbat. My gift is to bake/organize all of the desserts. I have done a lot of baking and dipped a lot of pretzels and there are 4 other bakers as well. Tomorrow I'm taking the day off work and have a group that will be plating the desserts with me. Also, have ordered new velvets for the bima which are due tomorrow. I made a radical change from our usual style - hope it works out and is received well. All in all, an exciting day tomorrow!

I most assuredly do not drink a set amount of water, and do not believe that doing so would make a difference for me. A while back WW stopped having water be a daily "requirement," which made me feel better. Some people say that their cravings go down in they drink water. I have never found that this worked for me. That. Ewas no said, I get lots of liquid in my diet, and don't ever feel dehydrated. I do drink water with dinner. I also definitely drink water during my exercise class.
Sleep is an issue for me. If I am anxious about something (unfortunately a common occurrence) I have a hard time sleeping. I have to go now, but will BBL...

Good morning everyone!
Water is one thing I do well. I drink lots of it, especially on weekdays, when I'm at work and my water glass is in easy reach. When I'm exercising regularly, I usually don't have any problem sleeping, and I almost always get enough sleep.
As I mentioned yesterday, though, I'm looking forward to the time change this weekend, so I can get up earlier and hit the gym. I just don't want to go at night anymore. And I remember that years ago, when I would get up early and go, I felt energized the whole day. Maybe a change back to that would do me good.

Ok, I'm back. So, I have issues with insomnia. One of the latest things I have tried was something I read about in an article. The writer had bad insomnia. She decided to listen to non-exciting books in bed (she used earplugs, kept in with a cloth athletic headband pulled over her ears). Her theory is that listening to a pleasant book would distract her from whatever the issue was that was keeping her up. I have tried this a couple of times and it seems to work . Even if you don't go to sleep right away, you are so distracted that you stop fretting that you're not sleeping!

Hi everybody, good to see you. I have been very busy and today is only a bit less than yesterday. However, that bit less is giving me a few minutes to write, so here I am.
Re today's topic: I drink a LOT of water. I take a diuretic, also allergy and asthma meds, so I must drink as much water as possible so as to not get dehydrated. Of course, this makes me run to the bathroom constantly!
As for sleeping: I have sleep apnea and insomnia because of it. I have no problem falling asleep, but I wake up during the night. My new schedule of getting up around 4AM to get DS to work on time is actually helping me sleep better, as long as I get to bed at an early hour. I try to take an afternoon nap when I am not busy, and that helps a lot.
I'll check back later. Have a peaceful day, Lee

I don't like plain water. If I put some sliced lemon in it, then I can drink it. My go-to drink was Diet Coke. But now,one of my doctors has instructed me to drink green tea, so I make a gallon of it, have it in the fridge all the time, and fill a large travel cup and take it along when I go out. Of course, it is sweetened a bit with Splenda. I use the decaf green tea so I don't have bladder issues. Aren't you impressed by how wonderful and compliant a patient I am? (Not)
I sleep and nap too much. I could give Lynne and Lee a couple of my excess farshluffen hours and we'd all be perfect. I use the TV to make myself sleepy. That's one thing DH just hates, the sound of the TV in the bedroom. While it makes me sleepy, it takes him out of his sense of sleepy and makes him wakeful. BTW, flipping channels on the remote - does that count as exercise?
Coco seemed cured of her diarrhea on Tuesday, but on Wednesday it's back. She pooped in the house 4 times last evening. She wasn't able to sleep and pooped in her crate and cried, so I had to take her out at 3 am. Luckily the weather is still pretty nice in San Diego. Back to a rice water diet today. Now I have to shampoo the rugs and hose down the patio. Why did I want a dog? What's wrong with a cat?

What kind of water do you drink, chaverot - bottled or tap water? Growing up in Chicago and drinking tap water is where I got my distaste for drinking water in general. It tasted yucky.

Almost the first thing I do when I get up is go downstairs to the kitchen, measure 8 cups of water into a Pyrex measuring cup (actually, a bit over the line for 8 cups since I find some evaporation to be the norm), pop in a single Celestial Seasonings herbal tea tea bag, pop it into the microwave oven, hit 12 minutes, then go upstairs to take my shower.
Later, I return to the kitchen, squeeze out the tea bag, and pour 8 cups of herbal tea into four large travel mugs. I take them with me and drink all day long. I buy varieties I like (Lemon Zinger is my #1 favorite), so there's no problem with the taste. Almost every single day, I finish all 8 cups worth. Once in a while, I have some left at bedtime, so it goes into the fridge for the next morning.
I have no problem drinking eight 8-oz cups of liquid every day.
And WW didn't "eliminate" the five to six cups of liquid when changing the plan to SmartPoints; they just stopped emphasizing the "good health guidelines" (I still follow the GHGs to the best of my ability).
But sleep; that's a horse of a different color. I don't get enough sleep. I have trouble getting to sleep much before 11, and I'm up before 6 in the morning. Even if I go to bed at 10, I'm still up until around 11 (sometimes I do fall asleep by 10:30, and that's really lovely). I can hardly wait to change the clock settings so I can get an extra hour's sleep, at least for a few days until my body readjusts to Pacific Standard Time...
I need some structure in my day, so I start by going to morning minyan (7:30), then twice a week exercise class (which starts about 15 minutes after minyan ends, and it's in the same building; and each day I have a set series of things I do). If minyan started later, I'd probably wake up later... But if I didn't start with minyan, I probably wouldn't get to exercise class at 8:30, and I'd probably veg for a while in front of the TV... Screw it. I get up early and start my day early.
On Shabbat afternoon, I LOVE taking a nap. Unfortunately, I don't get to nap every week... I'm growing envious of people who get in a nap when they schedule one...

Okay - more about tomorrow. My goal was to have 1000 "pieces" of dessert. I'm sure we will have at least that. Sometimes I panic that there won't be enough; just as often I panic that there will be so much left over. Whatever. The decisions have already been made, tomorrow we plate! btw I have been remarkably good even with all of the sprinkles and chocolate in my house - not calling me. I'll make some deal with myself about what I can have at the Kiddush.
The velvets - for the last 25 years or so all the bima velvets were a deep burgundy. The ark curtain has the ten commandments as a puffed applique of the two tablets with gold embroidery flanked by 2 gold lame lions with jewels coming out of their mouths. There is gold (and "jewels") all over. And that curtain was exactly the same as the curtain it replaced. So it's been many years like that. The new curtain has a modern tree of life, no jewels, no sequins, minimal gold. It's a radical change. The first step for me is that it should all please be delivered in time tomorrow - I checked and it was all completed today. Second is that it all fits. Then that I like it. And finally, the big reveal - will the congregation like it?! I have had little side meetings with quite a number of people over the last year and often walked around with a little bag of velvet swatches that I would show people and ask their opinions about. Still, it was quite a responsibility. I started thinking about it when a dear friend of mine who led the opening services (beautifully) nearly every Shabbat morning, passed away. The new bima cover is dedicated to him. I waited until I had enough $$ donated to change the ark curtain and podium covers as well.
