What’s on your mind — how to make kugel? This week’s Torah reading? Life goals? Prayer? We are all engaged in weight loss/weight maintenance journeys and we are all Jewish or at least interested in Judaism. We like to eat, we like to discuss. It is our goal here to provide each other support on our journeys, to share experiences, to call on our rich cultural heritage and texts, and to help each other grow spiritually.
Some of us take weekly turns starting the thread:

As I've been saying, this week’s Torah portion is Lech L’cha, Genesis 12:1 – 17:27. For those who follow the triennial cycle, this is the first year. We read Gen 12:1 – 13:18. Here is the breakdown:
1: 12:1-3 2: 12:4-9 3: 12:10-13 4: 12:14-20 5: 13:1-4 6: 13:5-11 7: 13:12-18
Here are the third and fourth readings (aliyot)
(third aliyah) 10 And there was a famine in the land, and Abram descended to Egypt to sojourn there because the famine was severe in the land.
11 Now it came to pass when he drew near to come to Egypt, that he said to Sarai his wife, "Behold now I know that you are a woman of fair appearance.
12 And it will come to pass when the Egyptians see you, that they will say, 'This is his wife,' and they will slay me and let you live.
13 Please say [that] you are my sister, in order that it go well with me because of you, and that my soul may live because of you."
(fourth aliyah) 14 And it came to pass when Abram came to Egypt, that the Egyptians saw the woman, that she was very pretty.
15 And Pharaoh's princes saw her, and they praised her to Pharaoh, and the woman was taken to the house of Pharaoh.
16 And he benefited Abram for her sake, and he had flocks and cattle and he donkeys and men servants and maid servants, and she donkeys and camels.
17 And the Lord plagued Pharaoh [with] great plagues as well as his household, on account of Sarai, Abram's wife.
18 And Pharaoh summoned Abram, and he said, "What is this that you have done to me? Why did you not tell me that she was your wife?
19 Why did you say, 'She is my sister,' so that I took her to myself for a wife? And now, here is your wife; take [her] and go."
20 And Pharaoh commanded men on his behalf, and they escorted him and his wife and all that was his.
Whew. So just a short series of questions...
1. Have you fibbed to save face or anything along those lines? 2. What were the circumstances? 3. Did it work out better for you than it did for Abram and Sarai? What was the upshot? 4. Were you able to "save face" or whatever it was that motivated you in the first place?

I have most assuredly fibbed on a number of occasions. Sometimes to save face, sometimes to avoid hurting someone's feelings. When it is the latter, it is excusable, inmy opinion. When it is the former, I am often unhappy with myself that I have done so. over the years, with maturity, I have learned that it is generally better to "own up" to one's mistakes, instead of fibbing to avoid embarrassment.
Here is a recent time I told a fib to save face. I had my cellphone in my back jeans pocket. Without thinking (a common occurrence), I pulled down my jeans to pee. I heard a "plop." I knew I was just peeing, so that plop had to be my phone, which of course died a very sad death. I was so aggravated and embarrassed. When my friend asked me what had happened to my phone, I fibbed. I told her it had landed in a puddle of water. (Technically true, but....) Later that week, my DH (not knowing what I had told her) mentioned that my phone had fallen into the toilet. She just laughed at me, and of course I felt like an idiot.
So, this is a fairly innocent fib...I have done much worse. As I said, I have gotten better. The truth will (usually) set you free!!

On another note, Louise, I am so glad your baking was well received and that your congregants liked the new velvets.
Lee, re: next week, here is my suggestion. If you are too tired or busy to come up with a theme, don't worry. Just open the thread, and ask us to help out by supplying a subject. No need to overdo it if you are in a busy stretch of time!! We will all understand.
It's Election Day! I am so glad that this nightmare is almost over. I hope the ending is happier than the beginning and the middle!

The first URL below takes you to a university newspaper article. You may want to plant your tongue firmly in your cheek to read it. The second URL includes words that you hope not to hear coming out of children's mouths. You are forewarned...

Boker Tov All! Holly, thank you for starting my morning off with a laugh! (Both are featured on my FB page now, the 2nd with "adult language" warning!)
Yes, I'v told fibs to keep myself from embarrassment - and often the embarrassment came right back to bite me in the form of being caught. And of course, the more complicated the fib, the harder it is to keep up! Simplest fibs work best. Fibs told to avoid hurting someone's feelings usually end up with hurt feelings anyway, somewhere down the line. So, unless it's a "yes, that length of haircut looks nice" I usually don't participate. (as to the haircut, usually, by the 2nd or 3rd time I see it, it does look nice - I've gotten used to it!) This is the stuff that future "what was I thinking!" photos are made of!
If you haven't done it yet, vote! If you have, all we can do is sit in nail-biting anticipation! A friend had invited me to a "Election Coverage Party" this evening at the VFW hall - we both decided that it might be prudent not to go. She's a Republican, I'm a Democrat - and we have managed to keep civil debate going on all through this election cycle, and to actually listen to one another. I think we may both have learned something.
Holy Shit - You've got to vote, LOL!
Have a good day ladies.

Good morning everyone! I'm sure I've fibbed to cover up embarrassment or to get out of something, but I can't think of a good story right now because I'm too busy giggling at Lynne's story! I'll try to think of a good one.
My DD28, who works at the same company as I do, is interviewing in my building today for a job in another department. It would be more of a lateral move for her than a step up, but there would be much more opportunity for advancement in the new department. If anyone wants to send some lucky vibes this way, send 'em on over!
I will be eagerly monitoring the news all day today! I hope today will be the day we elect our first woman POTUS!

I'm sure I have fibbed in this way but no good story comes to mind. Will continue to think on it. I probably fudge on my weight by a few pounds.
Having a restless day at work. There are things I could do but my concentration is lacking. Tonight I have a synagogue board meeting. Everyone will be fidgeting and looking at their phones to see what's going on with the election.
