I make a plan. I look at the menu ahead of time and decide what I'm going to eat. I've decided that the bread in most places isn't worth spending calories on. I also plan to take home part of the meal because it is almost always more than I usually eat. SO and I share desserts now. We rarely order one each.

I appreciate the ease of checking out menus online beforehand if it's a new restaurant.
Corinne's advice from one of her NoBS podcasts lingers with me... Breadbasket and tortilla chips are general admission and she only allows VIP food choices past her waistline velvet rope.
