Our DDIL on the highway

I'm still alive and hoping to get back to 100% in the next day or so! Talk about becoming lethargic! I've never felt so tired then had muscle soreness and last night the headache arrived. Yup true to the side effects listed. Yesterday the kids stopped by in the afternoon and stayed until Susan joined us around 6:00. I found some cheese/crackers and something to fill DGD's tummy for an after school snack and more later to keep her content until later at home. Susan, DH and I went uptown for baked fish. It's so yummy, then came back and played 3 games of cribbage (I won all three). I truly couldn't hold my eyes open any longer so when it was nearing 11:00, I said it would be the last game for me. We all called it quits. Today, I'm still tired but the headache went away and muscles are a bit better. My eyes, just feel like they're really dry so I'd love to close them for awhile with a short nap maybe but not to be.
DH has left to get paint and other items needed. I've cleared two sections of the counter area and remove switch covers. We'll see how far we get today since we're getting a late start but should see paint on the wall yet today. I'd totally spaced on getting the samples so whatever the colors are, that's what they will be. Right now I really don't care and will be happy to have fresh walls.
He just returned so guess I'd better see if I can start taping a few areas? Ugh, I'm just not feeling it but if he is, I won't complain.

Evening all. Not much doing except puzzles and reading.
Caryn - no beach, just visiting our Besties and going out for a Wine Dinner (BFF/DH follows Passover but won't be following it for dinner tonight).
Betty - glad you are a smidge better - hope another night's sleep kicks it out of you.
Nancy - so nice to see DDIL honored with a billboard!
hi to Peg, Jeanne, Gina, Sharon, Luv and Khalua.

Nancy - that is so cool for your DDIL!
Allison - enjoy your time w besties at the beach!

Furbaby here has been fed, but she is anxious because we have had a few rumbles of thunder. I’m watching the Cubs get trampled by the Red Sox who are wearing yellow and blue?
Nancy - wow, that’s awesome!! Congrats to your DDIL.
Jeanne - I saw another bottle of Seaglass wine, opened it a little bit ago. Really like it. DH has chosen pot pies for us for supper. Easy enough,
Have any of you tried the Knorr side things? I was impressed how good this garlic /parm rice and pasta were and so simple. It would go well with fish or chicken, thinking of that lemon chicken Caryn posted the other day. I really liked it with the garlic butter shrimp. I know I said that earlier, but dang it’s fun to find something fun and different.

Well I lifted dgd too much and I’m paying for it now my neck and shoulder are killing me so I’ve just been kind of icing and taking it easy and watching TV and reading was really bad yesterday feels much better today. Going to watch the correspondents dinner. Hope they have some funny stuff.
Caryn you can get a prescription from your doctor it’s a patch that you put behind your ear. My DH gets that because he gets seasick. I don’t. Funny thing is he worked on a fishing boat in Alaska Many summers…..he knew most he original big time fishing guys.
Betty why I don’t get goes vaccines at the suggestion of my docs….my immune system would be too u happy. Sorry you felt so crappy no fun!
RV I saw your pretty flowers on FB
Peg glad Maddie felt safe with you. Humphrey is afraid of storms too and fireworks. He stayed overnight here last night but he slept downstairs he snores and farts!
Jeanne you remind me I need to call eye doc…was supposed to have mine done in Jan got Covid! Need to reschedule.
Dgd dad took her to a Dinosaur play with people dressed up as dinosaurs with lights on them. he said she was probably the youngest one there and a little boy came up afterwards and said she was so good did any of the dinosaurs scare her! I guess she left she said by dinosaurs by dinosaurs. She loves dinosaurs. DGD is so different from how her mother was, which is really a good thing. Her mother was so terribly shy. It was painful! DDis still filling sick. I hope this passes!

I'm back to the world of the living! I wanted to just stay home last night but DH talked me into going to dinner so after a couple of drinks, it numbed my pain and made it through dinner and back to Susans for a couple games of cribbage. We got a good night of sleep so DH could get an earlier start back to the painting project this morning. The color is a bit lighter than I expected but a second coat goes on today and when I get everything back onto the counters and walls, I think it's going to be fine. It's so fresh looking but makes the counter seem tired. Oh well, that will be another project one day but probably should have done that before we painted. Not my problem! Maybe this will get DH moving on the rest of the kitchen update (if he even notices it). It wouldn't hurt to repaint the LR and DR either but I won't bring it up quite yet. LOL I'm thinking of carrying one of the kitchen colors over into the DR as well.
I need to make a loaf of bread with the bread maker and actually want to make some English Muffin bread for DGD. I'll see how this all goes today. I could plug the machine in somewhere other than the kitchen I guess. There's a load of laundry to finish putting away as well. Funny how I didn't have it in me to do it yesterday and it took all I had to just hang the hanging items over the back of a chair to wait to be taken upstairs and hung up. I'll get it done today now that I'm back to feeling whole again. Sheesh! I hope I can pull things together to figure out something for dinner too. I'll check the freezer and may have to pull out the IP or slow cooker and park it out of the kitchen somewhere. As you can see, I definitely am feeling more myself!
DSD said DGD has a concert on Thursday evening and we need to be there, well of course we will! She's hitting that odd stage and just had her first uni-brow waxed by DSD so feeling better about that plus the acne but seems to be better with the new face scrub and treatment DSD found for her. Then there's the hair growing in places she just isn't ready for but IIWII, she'll be 11 the end of June. They'd talked about underarm shaving which she wasn't so sure about so, they "did it together". She's just the best mom! DGD would be adorable dressed up for the concert but she doesn't want a dress so it will be pants for her and a top of some sort with ballet flat type shoes though DGD isn't fond of those either. Ugh! One girl called her a name because of her acne so she was hurt but DSD and DSIL sat her down and had a good talk about all that's happening with her body and how they too will go through these stages at some point along with ways to try to put those comments aside.
Well, enough about me. I need to get back to coffee and laundry so we can move onto breakfast and return to painting.

Good morning. It rained overnight and had me worried because I'd sprayed against the deer. The stuff has an awful smell and I not only wore my gardening clothes (I change in the basement before heading out through the garage) but an N92 mask. So this morning I sniffed one of the hostas and woohoo it still smells. Whoever asked, yes, the deer are enjoying their "salads" at my garden's expense.
Today I was going to fertilize the back garden and dig in the new hydrangea. Tomorrow I plan to put out milorganite - which a neighbor uses as fertilizer and which she swears repels deer and critters. I have a big bag and a small one. Let's see how far it goes. I also need to apply fertilizer to all the gardens. My last task before the weather is more stable is to weed that new little garden and put down garden soil (bought a bag yesterday). Then I'll start transplanting the spotted bellflowers that have taken over my front, big garden as well as the evening primrose that spreads like crazy - both into that garden. They can run amok there without any argument from me. Anyway, that's my task for the next few weeks. I normally don't plant annuals until mid-May so no rush for me. And frankly the gardens are so full now that I don't think I need many - just for the flower pots - 2 in the front and 6 in the back.
D is going to use Wet & Forget on our patio and also on my teak bench in the front. It's covered in lichen and moss and it needs attention.
Nancy - are those billboards common? That's so cool that your DDIL was honored that way.
Allison - enjoy your friend visit.
Luv - oh dear at having overdone. Hope today is better.
Betty - you too! Is this the RSV vaccine?
Jeanne - yes, I spray because of the deer. We have a herd that lives around here and they do a lot of munching. It's also why I covered my mountain laurel over the winter. The last 2 winters they ate all the new stems and the bush didn't flower. I was surprised at that since mountain laurel is the CT state bush and it grows naturally in our woods so I assumed it was as deer proof as anything. Wrong! When they're hungry those deer eat everything.
Gina - haven't heard from you in a while. All okay?
Good morning also to Sharon and Khalua if you're lurking. BBL

Peg, I just checked and found Sea Glass wine in Monroe so when I do my Aldi run, I'll have to snag a bottle to check it out. I think they had one I might like at Pick 'n Save.
Luv, DGD was one of those shy ones and still kind of is! Glad DGD is more open and enjoyed the dinosaurs! So nice her DDad took her and it gave DD and yourself a little break as well.
RV, oh I want flowers! Friday I can pick up my hanging Boston ferns at the new place I hadn't been to yet and apparently they have lots to choose some so I hope to pick up a load! I need to make a list of what planters I need to fill to be sure I get enough and can plan them out.
Caryn, are you doing a cruise? DH used to be affected with motion sickness a bit but found he's fine as long as he has a window so we had a balcony room which was wonderful to enjoy our morning coffee and tasty tidbits. We did take Dramamine with just in case but he never needed it.
I also need to finish reading Still Alice which is due in two more days but it's so interesting, that won't be a problem. I'd put it aside as I thought I'd already read it or something but found I hadn't so now here I am! Oh well. My DF suggested it due to my other DF who we saw signs of it while seeing her in Florida and she herself had witnessed it while interacting with her at the Library where she'd worked. I've yet seen her since then. It just always seems to be something but if I see her DH walking again, I'll chat with him to see if there's anything we can do to help.
Okay, now I need to focus on getting something done. Hi to all!

Betty - yes, we're on a cruise in Alaska in July. Leaving here on July 3, spending July 4 in Fairbanks and then transferring to the cruise line's hotel for the next night. We then start a land portion to Denali and they'll take us to the ship on time. 7 days on the ship, ending in Vancouver and we'll stay there for 4 days sightseeing and visiting friends.

Cool, overcast and possible rain for us today. I know I said it yesterday, but our yard is so beautiful now with all the flowering trees. I especially noticed it when we were driving in the driveway after church this morning.
I’m just sick at heart over the terrible destruction in other parts of our state. Tornados can wipe things out in seconds, but it takes years and years to rebuild. It does show the good side of humanity, as neighbors helping neighbors, and folks coming in to help that are strangers, but have a passion for helping.
Lunch today will be pork chops, in the oven if it stays cool, or on the grill if it warms a bit. Pretty sure DH will choose the oven, he’s not in love with grilling. Never really has been, but pretty much over it now. I can grill if need be, but I also want a nice day for it. Well, glory be! DH just asked if I had something for the grill, then chose potato salad to go with it. I can make that happen. Not sure what else we will have, probably a green salad, in fact, yes, for sure. Done. Decided.
Caryn - what a fun vacation to look forward to.
Betty - so glad you are feeling better. I am concerned you didn’t take time for yourself when you were feeling so poorly. Glad the kitchen project is happening! Poor DGD these next few years will be so hard as she and her body changes, and other girls can be so mean. Especially at those ages. So happy to know her dad and mom are ready and willing to talk with her about all of it.
Nancy - I was able to get connections this morning too. No errors and no help. Somedays it comes to me and other days I struggle to make sense of any of it. I got two packets of marigold seeds at church this morning, now to figure out where to sow them.
Allison - yum to breakfast out. What did you have, and did you do the farmer’s market too?
I think the potatoes are about done. Need to get them cooled enough to handle and make the potato salad.

Got a nice phone call - neighbors invited us to a grilled chicken dinner. She says she has everything but will make a pineapple casserole to bring along. She really liked it at Thanksgiving. It's a combination side dish/dessert. She will be surprised, and I will be too if I donn't get to the market and get some shredded sharp cheddar cheese. I have everything else.
Betty - Glad you're feeling better. Sounds like me and a covid vaccine.
Caryn - I have moth balls in my planters to keep the squirrels out. They love to dig in that nice soft dirt. DDIL said her boss said she deserved recognition. It is on a main Highway from Minneapolis to their town. Right near a casino on Lake Mille Lacs.
Peg - I have a hard time getting DH to grill anymore. I tell him to sit right by the grill cuz it takes so long for him to get up out of his chair and walk to the grill when the timer goes off.
Well - better make hay while the sun shines.

RV, love the recognition and sign so all can see! Interesting about the moth balls in plants! Wish I'd known that before they dug up my pot of hens and chicks! At least there were larger ones in the ground they didn't bother last year so hope they don't decide to this year. Lucky you, dinner provided (except for your pineapple dish, which sounds yummy - anything pineapple and I'm in)!
Peg, how nice to have seeds to sow and DH suggesting grilling?! Wow, it's your lucky day! I agree, I didn't take enough time for me after that vaccine. I should have had a couple days of just resting but that just didn't happen though I did get over it all the same but maybe faster had I? We will never know.
Caryn, you're doing our cruise we hope to do one day! June will be here before you know it. When did you start planning? We probably need to start thinking about it if we want to go next year unless we go at a less than perfect time of year.
Well, well, DH brought up replacing the countertops! Then suggested a different sink (if you recall I haven't had this one a year yet) since I could then go with one without the split center and switch to an under-mount like we have in the camper which I love. He said DSD would be really happy to take this one off our hands! LOL Yes she would, as hers is quite shallow! We were looking at our "worth" and realize, we can't take it with us so may as well use some. He will also talk to the flooring people to see what possibility there is of replacing the hard tile floor (which goes under the cabinets too)! They may have a solution. Well, there's my news!

Betty - that's exactly why D and I will be doing a lot of traveling in the next few years. That and of course "while we can" - not getting any younger. Woohoo on the new kitchen sink and countertops. And yes, we started planning about a year ago, but I'm going to recommend that you go to the Holland American website and give them your email. They are always emailing me with deals on future cruises. We traded Marriott vacation club points for this cruise (borrowed some from 2025 plus all of 2024).
I got all my backyard fertilized and planted the new bush. D pulled out the oriental bittersweet that I had bought at a garden center not knowing that it's invasive and not native. I was so angry and the stuff spreads everywhere. Not only where I planted it but even in my woods and front gardens. Grrrr. I was going to plant clamatis there - I have climbing "cones" but decided to wait until 2025 since I worry we didn't get up all the roots and want the chance to keep pulling until it's gone.
Tomorrow I'll start on the front. And then I'll weed like crazy...
I'm tired and thirsty. Heading to the living room to practice French. D is watching the Blue Jays.

Peg - Rizzo hit his 300th home run today. It was in Milwaukee and the crowd cheered him, even after booing him most of the game!
Nancy - hope dinner is fun.
Caryn - yes, travel while you can. It’s better when you can walk around as much as you want.
Tomorrow is DHs cataract procedure. He’s antsy!

Caryn - thanks for missing me. All good, just busy since we were gone 3 days last week. I've cruised Alaska 3 times, you will have a great time. When you are in the "Inside Passage" you will hardly feel the ship move at all. You may have some rough/windy seas between Denali and the Inside Passage (generally from Glacier Bay to Vancouver). So I would plan to take some seasickness meds the first few days. July will generally be calmer than later in the season. The first time I went, it was very rough from Glacier Bay to Sitka, but that was early September.
And yes, we are traveling now, while we can. I really want to do a Baltic Cruise and see St Petersburg, but that doesn't look like it will happen with the Russia/Ukraine war. Others on the want to go list are Panama Canal & British Isles. DH isn't thrilled about the canal, but I really want to see it. The cruise would also have to stop in both Costa Rica and Curacao. I keep looking for one with the right ports and right timing.
My garden has been the battle of the weeds & snails. My fig tree is struggling to come back after snails stripped all the new growth off of 3 main branches, leaves are growing on the 4th.
Betty - yeah for the new sink and kitchen redo. I'd like to replace our sink but it's undermount and we have a 5' x 10' solid quartz island that would have to be replaced. I don't want to deal with that, so the sink stays for now.
Jeanne - good luck to DH with his cataract.
Nancy - enjoy your evening out & awesome billboard. It's nice to be recognized like that
Peg - the destruction is just heartbreaking. Glad you are safe, and your flowering trees are so pretty! Spring came late here with all of our rain in March. The vines are now green and sending up shoots.
Allison - how was the wine dinner?
I walked to get our mail today and will walk again in the AM with my neighbor. Looking forward to Thursday when we go see Come From Away
It's well past 5 o'clock here, DH is wondering where his martini is!

Evening all. We enjoyed brunch in town then walked up and down the avenue and boardwalk for a total of a mile. Once back at the house we sat outside and read - it was sunny and mid-70’s. Really nice.
Betty - glad you are feeling better!
Gina - the wine dinner was awesome. Food and wine pairing were excellent.
Friends just left and we will go home tomorrow. DH doesn’t like the three hour drive in the dark.

Gina. The Hermitage in St. Petersburg is fantastic. Glad I saw it back in 1981. The Panama canal is worth the trip if you g o all the way through to the other side. We left from Ft Lauderdale and flew back home from Acapulco. We were on Holland America. Had a great time at dinner, came home, played some rummy. Time for shut eye so see you next chapter.
