What’s on your mind – how to make kugel? This week’s Torah reading? Life goals? Prayer? We are all engaged in weight loss/weight maintenance journeys and we are all Jewish or at least interested in Judaism. We like to eat, we like to discuss. It is our goal here to provide each other support on our journeys, to share experiences, to call on our rich cultural heritage and texts, and to help each other grow spiritually.
Some of us take weekly turns starting the thread:

Boker Tov All! This year we have the added pressure (or not) of having the 8th night of Hanukkah fall on New Year's Eve - and the 8th day on New Year's Day. When we were younger, we went out on NYE, usually to a small party of friends. At midnight everyone wished each other a Happy New Year, kissed everyone goodnight, & went home. NYD is traditionally a quiet day at our house - if we do a get-together, it's for board games or a snow-man. Which blends nicely with my personal ideas for 8th day of Hanukkah - all the candles lit, a game or 2 & a quiet & peaceful 8th day, with leftovers from the holiday somehow either being eaten or sent home with someone with children.
There are no NY resolutions in my life anymore. I know that when my spirit "knows" something must change - that is the time to start making changes. Diets do not start on Monday - or on Jan 1st. Exercise routines are tried out when I find them - not on some expected calendar day! Whatever day the class starts - that's when I must begin!
We are expecting another big winter storm (forecasts say it should hit anywhere from 8 AM to 2 PM - we'll see it when it gets here.) Again, I have a pile of firewood ready, kindling, firestarters & matches. There will be chili - either in the crockpot or on the woodstove. Hot chocolate mix. I don't understand how this one is supposed to dump a lot of snow on us - the weather map shows the moisture coming from the south. What do I know?! I know that many friends in the MidWest & East are getting snow & icy cold also.
Be safe, everyone!

Good morning everybody. Hope you are all well today. I just spent the last hour (!!) on the phone with various supermarkets, looking for Chanukah supplies, specifically candles. Safeway advertised them in today's circular and I tried two stores, but neither of them had anything, candles or otherwise. Giant had candles but weren't sure what else they had. Wegmans said that the candles were "in the back" and that the Chanukah display would probably be set up by this weekend. It was annoying. Grrrr!
This afternoon, I am going to the cardiologist to have an echocardiogram. I think it will be an easy test and hopefully I will have good results.
The sun is shining and it is chilly out but not too cold. Tomorrow and Friday, it is supposed to be really cold, and then this weekend, we are supposed to get either snow or freezing rain or ice. UGH!!! I do NOT like winter.
Re New Year's changes and resolutions: I am going to stop taking one of my medications, as planned with my doctor. I have been tapering off for awhile, and decided to stop taking it at the end of this year as a ceremonial thing. I am also going to eat more vegetables this coming year (I say this every year but this time I really mean it).
That's about all my news for the moment. I'll be back later, most likely. Have a peaceful day, Lee

My synagogue flirted with the idea of a NYE get together with havdalah, last candle lighting, latkes, schmoozing and whatever but it didn't get off the ground. No resolutions this year - just trying to hold my own until the holidays are over. A vendor brought me gifts at the end of the day yesterday - handmade pretzels, chocolates (like kisses), and snickerdoodles. My plan is to allow myself a SMALL amount of the chocolate (not realistic otherwise I suspect) and maybe half a snickerdoodle. Not too worried about the pretzels but they can add up too. It's the sugar that is the biggie for me.

I'm a veteran procrastinator, so I haven't really thought much yet about NY resolutions. We have plans for NY eve, which is to get together with two couples, as we have done for many years. But other than that, I have managed to put off thinking about what 2017 will look like. Maybe one of my resolutions should be to stop procrastinating!

Good morning everyone! It's gray and cold here, and we're expecting a lot of rain tomorrow and Friday. I'm grateful I don't have a long commute to and from work. DH and I usually carpool, but every day this week we're driving separately, for various reasons.
Today is our cookie exchange at work. We didn't have to participate, we didn't even have to bake the cookies ourselves, and even those who don't bring still get to have. Easy, right? I was going to ignore the whole thing, but that seemed impossible, given my weakness for cookies. Then I thought, how on earth am I going to control myself? So I stopped at Vons on the way to work, bought cookies I don't like for the exchange, bought a package of Vienna Fingers just for me, and ate six of them as soon as I got to work. Now I'm so full and over-sugared that the thought of any more cookies makes me feel ill. So maybe I can ignore the rest of the cookies now. I'll let you know how this strategy works. Ugh!
Regarding NYE, I don't like to be out on NYE because people drive like crazy folks, they're usually under the influence, and I'd rather be cozily at home. I'm so used to getting up early that I usually can't stay awake past 11 p.m. anyway, so I'm a total wet blanket when it comes to NYE. So we'll light candles with the kids and have latkes early, after havdalah, then the kids will do their separate things. Nice quiet evening. Ah, sounds good to me!

Oh by the way, I threw out the rest of the Vienna Fingers after I'd had my six. I guess I should have put them on a plate and added them to the exchange, but I was afraid I'd go back for more of them. Oh well, no one will miss what they don't know about!

My DD who is coming into town on Dec. 24-Jan 2nd with her husband and 2 girls has rented a suite at a Days Inn and invited all the siblings and their children to come over and celebrate New Years there. We'll have food and drink and make our own merriment.
Resolutions? I'm going to find out about getting the lap-band procedure in 2017. Have started to make some calls to find a physician who accepts Medicare, and will attend some seminars.

Just saying hi, been busy. Arrived home on Sunday evening. Had a good time visiting family in San Diego. I finally got my meds approved, so next Wed I will get my injection and no more breastfeeding after that. Today is my first day nursing him one time. DD is sweet, saw a mini colorful soccer ball, with the alef bet, and said for Avi, she picked out a Chanukah present for her brother. After lunch, she was eating a banana, and giving him small pieces. She is so loving. With the little kids, we stay home for NYE, we always have, except 9 years ago when DH took me out and proposed. I enjoy watching the Rose Bowl Parade on NYD. Need to teach DD how to play board games. Not tracking. Figured I will get back in the game, once DS is totally done breastfeeding, which is in a week. Mixed emotions. Waving HI
