What’s on your mind – how to make kugel? This week’s Torah reading? Life goals? Prayer? We are all engaged in weight loss/weight maintenance journeys and we are all Jewish or at least interested in Judaism. We like to eat, we like to discuss. It is our goal here to provide each other support on our journeys, to share experiences, to call on our rich cultural heritage and texts, and to help each other grow spiritually.
Some of us take weekly turns starting the thread:

Boker Tov All! I'm still laughing about Chamuckah eggnog donuts (waste of good brandy, IMHO!)
Portland is digging out of the snow, most of the kids have tomorrow off (and then all next week for winter vacation), many of the hills have been closed to traffic & sleds are flying every which way - all the best parts of a winter storm. We have water running in the bathroom so the pipes don't freeze, John's bringing in more firewood. Our temps will be very low for the next few days. Good times!
So - now we are pretty much ready for our Holidays. Culturally, emotionally & gastronomically - I'm ready! Sufganyot & latkahs, rugelach & chicken soup. Lee, I hope you were able to find your candles. I've polished all the brass till it gleams. Also bought new bulbs for the electric menorah in the window (one bulb burned out last year.) My tree of life tapestry will be plugged in - the 8 little electric lights twinkle nicely in the dining room. It's been a fun week!
Shabbat Shalom!

Good morning everybody. Hope you are all well today. DS and I have a fun-filled day planned. We are going to leave around 8:30AM for today's first showing of the new Star Wars movie at 9:45. Hopefully we can wait indoors because it is really cold out today --- wind chills are at 10 degrees! I am going to wear a scarf over my mouth and nose, as well as use my asthma meds. After the movie, we are going out for lunch, and after that, we are going food shopping. We should be able to get the candles today.
This weather is crazy. Tonight, after midnight, it could snow, sleet, rain, or ice up, lasting through noon tomorrow. Sunday, it is supposed to be --- get this --- one day of warm weather (62 degrees). Then on Monday, back to the 20's and 30's. Meshuggah!!!
Have a peaceful day, Lee

Rain. Started yesterday, late afternoon in some parts of the county, evening in more parts (like when I was driving home). Rained all night and the forecast is for rain most of today (followed by showers for a few hours, then cloudy, then mostly cloudy, and then the rain is supposed to resume). A good day to be indoors. Unfortunately, I'm already dressed for minyan (long sleeved t-shirt and scarf around my neck, though not a wool one — that was too hot), then breakfast with the minyanaires (I didn't make that one up, folks), then an appointment about 6 miles from home, and some time today I have to fill my gas tank... And services tonight (that's another 20+ miles away, although by then, it's supposed to be "only" cloudy...). I hate driving in the rain. Because it so rarely rains in the southern parts of California, southern Californians just plain don't know how to drive in rain, so in addition to slippery roads, there are drivers all around you who don't know what they're doing...

I'm giggling over "minyanaires" - good one! It reminds me of a gentleman in my congregation who commented once about a core group of us who often read Torah; he calls us the "tropettes."
Yep, SoCal drivers seem to park their brains at the door when they pick up those umbrellas, and there were plenty of brainless ones already on the road when I left for work. I just plan for it and leave earlier, and I usually get a better parking space that way. But at least it's not very cold (about 57 degrees), just very wet.
We're celebrating DS26's girlfriend's birthday at Shabbat dinner tonight, so I'm picking up her cake on the way home. We should be about 12 for Shabbat dinner, so I'm sure we'll have some lively conversation. If I don't get back here today, everyone stay warm and dry the best you can. Shabbat shalom!

Surprisingly enough, DH asked me (when I got back from minyan) about tonight. Seems he's as reluctant as I to drive to shul. So we're not going the 20 point something miles. Whew! One less thing to consider. (He thinks the rabbi may be the only one there, and she has a drive to get there too!)

Kind of a weird day at work. Very few people in (did I mention that my boss, who had recently been out for 5 weeks with pneumonia) had a(minor) heart attack last weekend? He has been in the hospital all week. With a lot of people out and business slow I'm like counting the minutes to go home. Perversely, I do have some things to do but somehow I need to have some things to feel guilty about (other than those chocolate not quite kisses that are not finished yet). My goal though is to get all that straightened out before we close for the holidays.
We are due for a "wintry mix" tomorrow. I plan to take the bus to and from shul. Will study the haftarah tonight since it will probably fall to me.
I went back to my regular weight training workout today but lowered the reps and weight for upper body in deference to my shoulder and not having done it much in a few weeks. Seems to be okay but I will have to ice my shoulder when I get home.

Slow day today. I'm trying to get going on house cleaning. I have guests coming next Saturday for a 9 nights and I need to deep-clean and get the 2 bedrooms ready. I need to shampoo the rugs too, but it's raining. It's not the cleaning, but the de-cluttering that takes the biggest chunks of time, especially the piles of paper.
My DDiL's parents were supposed to be flying in for first candle of Chanukah, but the husband has Alzheimer's and last week had some aggressive episodes that put him in the hospital twice and now have necessitated moving him out of the home into a facility. I don't know if that's permanent or just temporary. All the dementias are nasty diseases and also slow and drawn-out.
Have a good Shabbat, everyone. Stay dry and warm.
