What’s on your mind — how to make kugel? This week’s Torah reading? Life goals? Prayer? We are all engaged in weight loss/weight maintenance journeys and we are all Jewish or at least interested in Judaism. We like to eat, we like to discuss. It is our goal here to provide each other support on our journeys, to share experiences, to call on our rich cultural heritage and texts, and to help each other grow spiritually.
Some of us take weekly turns starting the thread:

And for those of you that stop by to read this thread without posting — you are welcome to do that but you are also welcome to chime in!

Hi everyone, and shabbat shalom! Frieda, I'm not sure if you saw yesterday's thread, but we did a series of answers to the question of what our go-to foods were for late night munching, so you might want to go back and take a look.
One day in India I looked up at a building, and there was a swastika about the doorway! And then I noticed that several other of the buildings also had swastikas prominently painted on their exteriors. I asked our guide about it, wondering if this was somehow a holdover from WWII, or if we had stumbled into the neo-nazi section of Delhi. Our guide explained that actually the swastika is an ancient symbol meaning auspiciousness or good fortune in the Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain religions! The use of the swastka by Hindus dates back many many thousands of years, and has nothing to do with the evil third reich. Indeed, as we viewed ancient palaces and Hindu temples, I noticed the symbol everywhere. I googled it, and learned that because of its association with Nazis, some countries have banned the use of the swastika. But because Hindu swatikas predate Nazi ones by centuries, and in fact are part of the religion, that won't happen in India. Believe it or not, after awhile, I (almost) got used to seeing the swastika, and didn't recoil every time I saw it.
I enjoyed reliving my India experience with you guys; thanks for your responses. I hope we all have a restful and wonderful Shabbat! P.S. TO ANGELIKA: OUR SENATOR, BILL CASSIDY, GOT ABSOLUTELY PUMMELED AT A TOWN HALL MEETING NEAR NEW ORLEANS A COUPLE OF DAYS AGO OVER THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT ISSUE! Truly a red state phenomenon! Lynne

My mother had a lamp that was probably porcelain or china, in a cylindrical shape. There were a lot of small things painted on it including the swastika. She arranged the lamp such that the swastika was toward the wall so no one would see it. So I knew as a child that the symbol was originally something positive, although I didn't know what culture it came from. Thanks, Lynne, for filling in the gaps!
My furniture arrived yesterday. All of it is approximately where it should be, and of course there are tons of boxes that need to be emptied with contents put away. Most of the boxes are labeled either "fragile" or "books" so that part at least is easier to deal with.
If I'm not back later, Shabbat Shalom, gut Shabbes, to all.

I would have been pretty freaked out too seeing that symbol all over. I work for a company that publishes art and also some lifestyle books. In the course of my work I have across a picture and explanation about the symbol but that doesn't match being assaulted with it in reality!
This weekend I plan to make part of my Purim costume - a green skirt - so I can start to see it taking shape.
Thank you for an interesting week, Lynne. Shabbat shalom.

Boker Tov All! I also realized to was an old, old symbol - I believe it has significance in some Native American cultures. That being said....I try not to freak out too much!
Lynne, I've enjoyed this week!
Shabbat Shalom, all!

Well, this week I've been eating carefully and trying to get back into losing weight. The days are starting to pass by more easily as the food becomes more consciously prepared and mindfully eaten. The first week is always rough. I've also taken some walks, used my resistance band and lift weights in front of the TV at night.
I went to see The Great Wall yesterday and it was awful. I should have listened to the Rotten Tomatoes low rating. But last night, I caught The Book Thief again on TV and although I have already seen it, I watched again. It was wonderful.
DS#4 has gotten a letter from the Housing Authority to come for an interview and bring a bunch of documents. The waiting list was 10 years long. If he qualifies, he will get a Section 8 voucher. His current rental accepts Section 8, so it will be a smooth transition for him. It is very hard to find landlords willing to take Section 8 in San Diego. If you have a special needs child or someone in your extended family, please get on the waiting list in your area. It's a long process, but a rental subsidy can be vital to have.
Lynne, thank you for sharing your trip to India. Fascinating!
Shabbat Shalom l'kulam.

Hi everybody. Sorry to be so late today! I have been all over the place busy, busy, busy. Among other things that I did today was to go see the movie "Sing." It was great! I really enjoyed it. It's an animated musical and lots of fun. There were little kids literally dancing in the aisles.
Have a peaceful rest of the day and a great weekend, Lee
