What’s on your mind — how to make kugel? This week’s Torah reading? Life goals? Prayer? We are all engaged in weight loss/weight maintenance journeys and we are all Jewish or at least interested in Judaism. We like to eat, we like to discuss. It is our goal here to provide each other support on our journeys, to share experiences, to call on our rich cultural heritage and texts, and to help each other grow spiritually.

Boker Tov All! I was too tired to post last night, so here I am! It was interesting to read what shaped our thinking as we became young adults & what has stayed with us all these years! Frieda - YAY for the swim suit & Hooray for the walking! I'm looking forward to when I can walk outside comfortably again. The news, while disturbing, is getting more and more interesting. Lately I've been watching 1 hour in the AM, and about 1 1/2 hour in the PM - I cannot allow myself more than that because I become too distraught. (John would watch all day - we've come to the conclusion that is isn't good for either of us!) A child on a school tour is embraced/hugged by the president, not once, but 3 or 4 times, which was creepy enough, but then he also flashes "white power" (WP) at the camera - unnerving! For me also, the image of those little darlings being escorted out of the buildings, in the cold, sitting in their little cribs- it tears me right up, Beryl. It is interesting to me that this president has NOT stated he will put the power of the federal government into the investigation of these hate crimes that are happening. But he HAS asked the Congress to investigate his early morning twit, er, tweet about President Obama. And suddenly Lindsey Graham (to whom I had never given much credit in all his years) is becoming my new hero! "Strange days indeed!" It is interesting to me, that the things I learned in HS US Government class are coming back to haunt me now. The preamble to the Constitution: “We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of ..." Today I would really like to talk about "insure domestic tranquility." Somehow, this president's motive seems to be to keep the country as roiled & excitable as possible at all times - to what end? "Government by twit" (whether "twit" is a verb or person here does matter) is not working well for us! N Korea is testing missiles, Russia, at our president's own invitation, is hacking the heck out of us, the CIA is compromised to within an inch of its' life, Congress is begging to be "repealed and replaced" at the next earliest election, the AG appears to be suffering from the beginnings of dementia (just listen to him talk!), and the entire West Wing seems to be falling all over itself, a la Keystone cops! Funny in a B&W movie. Not funny in real life! "Domestic tranquility" - it has a sound of "beit Shalom" to it, doesn't it!? How do we get there from here? ? I live in hopes that the investigation into the tweet that the president is asking for finds the intersections between the ongoing investigations & any other machinations of this would-be-emperor's mind. Haul it all out into the light of day. He deserves what he will get! And while I had not planned to "talk politics" today - I'm in enough of an agitated state, that I can't help myself. So - the question is, how DO we get to a state of "domestic tranquility" from where we are now?? How do we calm all of this down & find a good balance for the country?

A comedian, I forget which one, said it best. He said : "The presidency is really supposed to age you. By that I mean the president, not the public. It's been a month, and I already feel like I've aged 50 years!"
Watching cable news non stop is definitely informative and entertaining but it might do damage to our psyches. I'll tell a story, having nothing to do with Trump. A few years ago, I was getting dressed and watching CNN. A small plane had crashed into a high rise building. Oh no, the commentators said, could this be a repeat of 911? Stay tuned! More attacks may be coming!! I had to go, but I was beyond distraught. A few hours later, I tuned in and learned that, while tragic, the incident had been a true accident. No repeat of 911. I had suffered several hours of real angst ...
Sometimes, I believe that maintaining one's domestic tranquility must override the impulse to stay tuned.

Sorry for being MIA yesterday - last night we made the 440 bags for Mishloach Manot. Everything went smoothly. Haven't been able to catchup on the thread yet but hope to be back later. btw - the green makeup I ordered arrived and will be perfect. I still have to make my torch tonight (Lady Liberty)

To me, what's very frightening, is that while we're all focusing on the horrors he is signing and saying, behind our backs go on more horrors than we knew. So far:defunding the EPA, dismantling the DOE, taking away safeguards for our environment and the workers, removing money from women's health, putting up roadblocks to voting for minorities, supporting white supremacy...shall I go on? I find it almost impossible to get through each day anymore hearing all this. Give him a chance? To what? Allow my grandchildren to be killed? Not in my lifetime. Sorry. I am beside myself on this.

Talking about the current administration is not good for my mental health. Angelika, please don't take offense, I don't mean to usurp your position, but may I suggest another topic? There are certain songs that I use to steady myself when I'm stressed. You know how sometimes you hum a few bars and then the song is in your head and sticks to you all day? Maybe it's just the humming itself that is soothing, like a mantra or a meditation. Do you have any songs that lift your spirits, change your mood? Hi everybody. Hope you are all well. I only got about three and a half hours of sleep last night as my shoulder hurt a lot (I strained in PT yesterday doing a new exercise), but I fortunately was able to take an hour and a half nap this afternoon. I feel much better, although my arm still hurts. When I go to PT tomorrow, I am going to ask my physical therapist to give me extra time with the hot and cold pads instead of doing most of the usual exercises.
Re finding a balance between being informed and going nuts over the news or being oblivious: I think everyone has to find what works for them individually. For me, I can't watch most TV news as it gets me too agitated. On the other hand, I find it essential to read the Washington Post every day and to check out various news sources online. I also talk about the news with my mom on the phone, and sometimes DS to a lesser degree. I take part in political discussions online and in person when they are not too upsetting. I feel good about being involved to that degree.
I have a show coming on in a few minutes, so I will close, but I will write some more later if I am not too tired. Have a peaceful evening, Lee

Well, the scale is going down. I am down 4 lbs. total in 2 weeks. That's enough to make me happy today. I'm writing down what I eat in a notebook. That's good too. It forces you to keep your eyes open and see what you are eating. I didn't rejoin WW though.
I'm fretting over DS#4. He was supposed to meet me for lunch at Costco (I bring my own now. No more Polish sausage, hot dogs and pizza) and he no-showed. That's not like him to miss a meal. He doesn't answer his phone or texts.
