What’s on your mind — how to make kugel? This week’s Torah reading? Life goals? Prayer? We are all engaged in weight loss/weight maintenance journeys and we are all Jewish or at least interested in Judaism. We like to eat, we like to discuss. It is our goal here to provide each other support on our journeys, to share experiences, to call on our rich cultural heritage and texts, and to help each other grow spiritually.
Some of us take weekly turns starting the thread:

And for those of you who stop by to read this thread without posting — you are certainly welcome to, but you are also welcome to chime in!

Boker Tov! Posting about yesterday's topic. Routines are very important, young and old need them. My daughter knows what is expected of her. In the mornings, I usually dress before I get the kids up, so I am ready for them (otherwise i wouldn't have time to get dress). I could go into more details, but don't have time. I always measure my cereal and milk, every time, even when I am way off plan. Tzav was my Bat Mitzvah portion. I remember commenting on my dad who bought a new suit for the occasion. He is known for his tye dye shirts, so this was huge for him to be ready for his daughter's bat mitzvah. Getting my monthly shot today. Parents are coming this afternoon. Making turkey breast for dinner and lunch out tomorrow (for my birthday). Have a great day everyone. Tamara

Hi everybody. Hope you are all well. My shoulder is giving me even more trouble, so I went ahead and made another appointment with my orthopedist. The earliest he can see me is Monday, so I also made an appointment with my primary doctor for later this afternoon. I am going to ask him for pain meds, and since he knows that this is something that I wouldn't ask for if I weren't really in pain, I think he will prescribe some for me. Even if he only gives me enough to last me until the Monday appointment, that would be a big help. Not sleeping because of pain is making me very unhappy. When I saw the orthopedic doctor before, he said that if the PT didn't cure my shoulder, he would probably have me get an MRI for more information than the X-rays showed. He also said that he might have me get a shot in my shoulder. Whatever he decides on Monday, it is definitely time to do something either instead of or in addition to the PT.
Have a peaceful rest of the day, Lee

Yesterday's intake interview downtown at the Housing Authority went extremely well. DS#4 will get a determination letter in 30 days and I'm confident he will get approved. At 60 days, he has to attend a 2 hour orientation and then he gets the Section 8 voucher. This has been a long time coming. He's also doing well at his new p/t job at a supermarket. He had help finding the job through one of the job development agencies and they provided a job coach for the first weeks. The only thing he's not doing well with is his weight.
I'm off today to do a mammogram. I've only done a mammogram twice, one in 2010 and in 2013. Both times I got called backs for biopsies, but they were negative both times. And we'll see what happens this time.
I'm all out of cooked vegetables. I have shopped, so I have veggies to work with. Brussel sprouts, zucchini, 4 colors of peppers, asparagus, eggplant. I have to do some cooking as I like to stock my refrigerator.
Tonight I am joining a class called Jump Start for Health at the YMCA. It's a year long program to avoid diabetes. I heard about it through an email from Blue Shield that had the following info:
"Jump Start for Health is the Skinny Gene Project’s diabetes prevention program. It is an evidence-based, lifestyle change program that is recognized by the CDC for effectively being able to help prevent or delay type 2 diabetes. In collaboration with the Skinny Gene Project and Champions for Health, the Mission Valley Y is offering a member benefit to you as part of our Healthy Living initiative.
This one-year program, which is free to Y members, features four to six months of an intensive lifestyle modification program, followed by six to eight months of support to improve problem-solving and coping skills for long-term success.
This proven program can help people with prediabetes and/or at risk for type 2 diabetes make achievable and realistic lifestyle changes and cut their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58 percent."
Why not, right? We have to take advantage of every opportunity that comes knocking at our door.
All good things,
Frieda

Hi again everybody. I saw my doctor this afternoon. He prescribed me ten days worth of pain meds, to be taken at bedtime so that hopefully I'll be able to sleep better. I am going to get an MRI next week. In the meantime, I will try not to worry and to think as positively as I can. He also said I should stop PT, although it's okay for me to get my evaluation this Friday to take to the orthopedist on Monday.
Have a peaceful night, and thanks for your support, Lee

Louise and I both are chanting haftarah this coming Saturday morning. In addition, I’m chanting the second aliyah. Let’s take a look at aliyah #5 today.
34 And Adonai said to Moses: Take the herbs stacte, onycha, and galbanum—these herbs together with pure frankincense; let there be an equal part of each. 35 Make them into incense, a compound expertly blended, refined, pure, sacred. 36 Beat some of it into powder, and put some before the Pact in the Tent of Meeting, where I will meet with you; it shall be most holy to you. 37 But when you make this incense, you must not make any in the same proportions for yourselves; it shall be held by you sacred to Adonai. 38 Whoever makes any like it, to smell of it, shall be cut off from his kin.

Sorry, ladies. I got an emergency phone call and had to leave to take care of something. I just got home. Here’s the rest of what I was planning to post about 7 hours ago…
Another recipe, this time for a powder to be put on the Ark. Do you make anything that you refuse to use for any purpose other than that for which you originally intended it?
