What’s on your mind — how to make kugel? This week’s Torah reading? Life goals? Prayer? We are all engaged in weight loss/weight maintenance journeys and we are all Jewish or at least interested in Judaism. We like to eat, we like to discuss. It is our goal here to provide each other support on our journeys, to share experiences, to call on our rich cultural heritage and texts, and to help each other grow spiritually.
Some of us take weekly turns starting the thread:

I have a lot to do this week. One, of course, is to get myself back on track – putting that aside for a moment. I also need to complete approx. 175 dipped pretzels for a bat mitzvah next week and start the daunting task of kashering for Passover. A head count is also due to the caterer next week for our community seder and, with the rabbi, get a plan in place for kashering the synagogue kitchen. In order to make all this doable I need to break things down into parts and get a doable “bit” done each day. Today I went shopping with a friend and bought the paper goods, shmura matzah, soda and some other things for the community seder and also some stuff for myself. These are things that I either can’t get in my local supermarket or that it’s a PIA to get. So that’s already done. As for the pretzels I have almost 100 done so I need to make 20-25 a day for most of the days next week. I would also feel better if I at least brought the Passover boxes up from the basement, as much so I can check what I have from last year and what I need to get.
I’m still a little freaked out, but by dividing it up I’m trying to keep from getting overwhelmed. So why not the same about getting myself back on track? I can’t change everything in a day so for today I’m recommitting to “Less sugar, less pain” (a variant of “Less weight, less pain”). I know I can do that. As for my weight changing – it will surely come but is not my focus right now.
Anyone else want to chime in about strategy?

I was AWOL yesterday as a result of way too much to do.Mostly Passover prep (the making of the gefilte fish, for one thing). I just had a chance to go back and read yesterday's thread.
Louise, I love the prayer, AND I KNOW you can get yourself on track. You're an amazing person. Every time in life I have been forced to make a change, things somehow worked out for the best. I truly believe that will happen with you.
Frieda, Mazel tov on your amazing progress in getting more fit! That's great news!
Peachy, I'm glad you're feeling better. Sounds like the mother of all sinus infections.
Angelika, when is the cataract surgery?
Lee, I hope your shoulder hurts less than mine does right now!!! (After a long day of chopping, etc., I'm in pain!)
Re strategy, I really like the one day at a time approach. And each day you succeed, the next day seems a bit easier. At times when this works for me, I tell myself at the beginning of the day that I will take care of myself "just for today." Every time I'm tempted to go off the rails, I close my eyes and repeat "just for today." Oh sure, sometimes this works better than others, but it has been a good strategy for me.

Good morning everybody. Today I will be seeing the orthopedic specialist to hear the results of the MRI I had on Friday, plus to talk over what to do next for my shoulder. I looked up more information online in the middle of the night when I couldn't sleep, and it was mostly reassuring. Hopefully, the doctor will recommend my getting a cortisone shot rather than surgery. At any rate, I will deal with whatever I have to deal with, hopefully with courage and grace. Also, I bought a cheesecake for after the doctor visit (!), so that my family can either celebrate or commiserate with me. I'll keep you posted as to what the doctor says and how I feel. Right now, I am reasonably calm and not imagining horrible possibilities.
I think that this paragraph says a lot about my particular strategies of coping with situations. I believe in asking for professional help (as soon as I am able to get my head out of the sand of denying that I have a problem), finding out information on my own as well as whatever I can learn from other people, acting as calmly as I can, and rewarding/encouraging myself with whatever I feel would really help (and I am okay with it being food since I do not do so constantly).
This problem has gone on for a long time, and hopefully today the doctor will have good news for me. Think a good thought for me if you have the inclination; my appointment is at 1:15PM EST. I'll write more later today when I know what's going on. Thanks for all your support!!! Have a peaceful day, Lee

Boker Tov All! Today is pre-op physical day! YAY! (It seems like it's been a very long time coming) Surgery is on Friday. I got a packet in the mail, with detailed instructions, & I will be given a time today. My plan will be to load up the crockpot in the AM, and when we get home, dinner's ready. With leftovers.
Peachy - I'm so glad you are back! Yes, it does take a long time for your poor liver to clear all that stuff out of your body - so, yes, lots of water is a good thing to keep flushing it all out.
Frieda - I love what you are doing for yourself - and that you are seeing an immediate benefit!
Lee - all good thoughts for your news today. I love that you've bought the cheesecake - for celebration or commiseration - may you only need it to celebrate!
Louise - you are thinking ahead & taking everything in manageable "bites." (interesting analogy, no?) Can you slip a teen-aged boy a $ or 2 to bring the boxes up from the basement? Dishes - they are never light!
I need to go wake John. He has to drive me, as I will have my eyes dilated.
Have a good day, everyone!

Louise, your strategy is excellent. In Recovery, Inc. a self-help group for nervous and anxious people, which uses a system of cognitive behavior training, based on the work of Dr. Abraham Low, a neuro psychiatrist, this strategy is called "part-acts". Not only are you encouraged to break down the overwhelming task into bits, but you are asked to recognize and applaud yourself for each bit accomplished.
Like your list of things to accomplish at synagogue, you might want to make your food strategy more specific. Example, Monday's act, give the stash of chocolate to your co-workers. Tuesday, the goal is to clear your pantry of sweets. Wednesday, set aside to buy fruits and veggies. Thurs: Prep and chop fruits and veggies, ready to eat. Friday: Cook 2 days ahead so you have healthy food over Shabbat. Sunday, track for one day. Your strategy needs to do-able, specific and measurable, right? Just like your to-do list.

Hey, chaverot,
May I encourage all of you to make a small comment after each person's post daily? When no-body comments or responds, it feels like nobody has read what you wrote.

Hi again everybody. This will be short as I am very tired. I saw the orthopedic specialist today. He said that I am an unusual case because I have severe arthritis in my shoulder, most of the cartilage has worn away, and some of the parts of my shoulder are moving out of place due to the inflammation. He gave me a shot, and he said that if it works for me, I will have less pain in my shoulder over the next couple of weeks. If it doesn't work for me, I may need to have part or all of my shoulder replaced. I'm going to see him again in six weeks, and during that time, I will be keeping a log about whatever pain I'm feeling, what medicine I'm taking, and anything else that's relevant.
I'll write more when I'm up to it, probably tomorrow. Thanks for your support. Have a peaceful evening, Lee

It sounds like we all have a lot on our plates these days. I made it through a whole day at work today, and though I'm wiped out, I feel good about my accomplishment. A lot of things piled up in my absence, but I do feel like I made good progress and will be OK this week.
I wish everyone strength in what you're facing: daunting tasks, pain, and everything else challenging us. I'm feeling a bit daunted myself; I just realized how little time is left before Passover, and DH and I are going to have to come up with a strategy to get it all done. I also have quite a bit of Torah reading coming up that I have to study and prepare for. Oy!
