What’s on your mind — how to make kugel? This week’s Torah reading? Life goals? Prayer? We are all engaged in weight loss/weight maintenance journeys and we are all Jewish or at least interested in Judaism. We like to eat, we like to discuss. It is our goal here to provide each other support on our journeys, to share experiences, to call on our rich cultural heritage and texts, and to help each other grow spiritually.
Some of us take weekly turns starting the thread:
Angelika Holly Lee Louise Lynne Peachy
And for those of you who stop by to read this thread without posting — you are welcome to do that but you are also welcome to chime in. And I'm curious about what makes someone read a thread but never post to it... The Thursday thread had over 70 views, and the Wednesday thread had over 80 views... I suspect each of us isn't checking the thread more than 11 (or 13) times a day...

I went to a Rosh Chodesh gathering Thursday evening. We made challot! Each woman chose to make one larger or two smaller ones, and whether to take home the braided dough to bake at home or to have the challah baked at the synagogue kitchen (I chose the latter). I learned how to braid four strands! I left one challah for the breakfast for the Friday morning minyan as did one other woman. (I also left the Trader Joe's dark chocolate covered almonds with sea salt [that I brought to contribute to the nosherei for the Rosh Chodesh group] for the Friday minyan-goers.) I'm going to bring the other challah to services Friday evening.
Friday (today as you read this; tomorrow as I'm writing) I have yahrzeit. My sister's first born died about 9 years ago from some strange cancer. I carried him at his bris, turned him onto FM rock when he was about 11 and listening to AM rock (and he became a professional musician as an adult; I like to think I had something to do with that). For his bar mitzvah, I asked him what he wanted and he named a particular Elton John album; when I told him I was his only aunt and he could ask me for anything, he made me realize that because I was his aunt, I was the only person who actually WOULD get him what he really wanted (so I did). At his wedding reception, I led motzi, and at his funeral, I gave the eulogy (and chanted El Malei Rachamim, and led the mourners kaddish). So I'm saying kaddish for him both in the morning and in the evening (evening at my own shul where the custom is for people who marked a yahrzeit during the week to rise and say who they're saying kaddish for).
And Sunday afternoon is my last class of the year for the Reform congregation. I still have to figure out what to do for a "wrap up" of the year for the students...

Good morning everybody. Hope you are all well. I can't believe that it is the end of another week, or that I am supposed to lead again starting this Sunday!! Things have been so chaotic. I will do my best to come up with topics though. Please be patient if I'm not too imaginative next week!
Holly, I'm sorry for your loss.
Today I think I'm going to call my primary doctor and set up an appointment for Monday (he is observant and doesn't work Fridays). I am having problems stopping the ibuprofen as he wanted me to, so I will be asking him what to do. He will probably say for me to go see the orthopedist and that they will work out a long-term medication plan for me together. If I do see the orthopedist sooner than my previously scheduled appointment, he will probably say that surgery is the next step. I do NOT want to do that if I can avoid it. Maybe there is something else I can do. I will find out.
Anyway, I will check back later. Have a peaceful day, Lee

Boker Tov! Holly, sorry for your loss, may his memory continue to be a blessing. My sister is expecting in May, already has the c-section scheduled, and the bris?!? Bris would be on Memorial Day. She figured most people have it off. DH doesn't, as he needs to work as Shavout is that week. So I informed my family that I may not be able to go, and they are upset. Mom was giving me guilt trips. Making a 2 and a half hour drive, by myself with 2 little ones, is a lot. Lately, my pain has been increasing. So need to take care of me. Working today, special ed middle school. Shabbat Shalom everyone

Boker Tov All! Holly, I too am sorry for your loss - and may his memory continue to be a blessing!
It's a beautiful morning! I'm off to work after a short walk today - this afternoon there is a "Shop Hop" in town, many of the businesses will be staying open late, there will be drawings for prizes (everyone has made gift baskets, and put something into a "grand prize" basket) - so I volunteered to come early and open up. The others can stay late.
I just got my "RESIST" bumper sticker in the mail - Oregonians are big on wearing our political views on our bumpers! (since I don't think it would be quite kosher to wear my "Nevertheless, She Persisted" t-shirt to work, this will have to do!)
I need to get ready to go - Have a good day ladies!
Shabbat Shalom!

Holly, my condolences to you and your family. What a lucky man your nephew was to be close to you, and I know his memory will always be for a blessing.
I am a huge Elton John fan -- which album did your nephew (z"l) want?
Lee, I hope you don't end up having to have surgery, but if you do, I hope it goes well and will take care of the problem once and for all. That's so aggravating.
Tamara, I agree wholeheartedly with Angelika. Don't let anyone get away with guilt-tripping you. It would be wonderful if you could make it, but there will be other family events to share, and your sanity trumps other people's wishes. I think a 2.5-hour drive with two little ones is way too much to expect of you. Take care of yourself and don't feel guilty.
Holly, thank you for a wonderful week, and I wish everyone an enjoyable and relaxing weekend. Shabbat shalom!

Shabbat Shalom, everyone. I'm down 17 lbs now, after 10 weeks. I still have not conquered the exercise routine, but I'll just keep on trying until I do. I have an 11:15 fitness class at the Library today. I'll really try and get there today.
All good things,
Frieda

I'm sorry to have missed the week. Got back very late Wednesday night and it has been hectic at the office - apparently I am taking over some of the responsibilities of someone that was laid off and is leaving today. It won't be hard I don't think but I had to try and learn a bunch of new programs today.
The really big news is that as of this morning my mother has internet, so next time I go to FLA I won't have to be MIA from the thread. It's so cute - she emailed me that now she's finally in the 20th century! Oh dear!
I have been very busy working out the details for my rabbi's 20th anniversary celebration next Shabbat. Will tell you more about it over the coming week.
My other big news is that I still don't have pain in my knees or shoulder (or very little). I have started my workouts again for about a week now - when I was sick was too drained.
Shabbat shalom.

Hi again. I called my doctor's office and made an appointment for Monday morning with his PA-C, as my doctor will be out for a week.
Today was a very nice day, even though my arm and shoulder continue to hurt more. After work, DS and I went to Michael's and he got two sketch pads (buy one, second one half off) and a really good pen set (40% off coupon). In the afternoon, we went to see "The Lost City of Z" and we both liked it a lot.
I'd write more but I am really tired. Have a great weekend, and I will do the lead on Sunday and the following week. Have a peaceful evening, Lee
