Join in if you are someone who loves, owns, has owned, leases, rides, or just likes to watch these magnificent animals! We love to share stories and talk about the critters that keep us on our toes and in the saddle while on this weight loss journey. If you don't see this thread, please feel free to start it. WW refugees from the 50s board I'm not up to Faye's standards for doing personals. We'll muddle along though.
Barb-will you try to ride today?
Amy-glad your GN loved riding Reuben.
Lacey-glad you made it to this board
Cathy-glady you could make it too.
QOTD-Do you remember your first ride on the equine species and what age were you?
I remember riding in the car with DM when we passed my DU riding on the side of the road. As we slowed down to pass him I must have indicated I wanted to ride because I remember sitting in front of the saddle with him. DM said I was 2 and a half. She also said the ride was about a block but this is the first time I remember riding.
Welcome all other Horse Lovers!

My first riding experience started off not great but ended up fine. I think I was around 9 or 10 years old and my older cousins were made to take me along to a rental stable with them. As soon as we got out of sight from the stable they took off and left me behind. I was very scared at first but my horse was dead quiet and stayed at a walk. At one point a another group cantered past and he cantered a few strides but then went back to walking. I was feeling pretty secure in a western saddle. I had a conversation with the horse and he just took me for a nice walk in the woods for an hour and we ended back at the stable. My cousins arrived back a few min. before me and got in a bit of trouble for losing me. I decided after that that I wanted to learn to ride so I went to a summer camp for 2 weeks and got the very basics of English riding. So glad I was put on a sweet old horse for that first time because it was up to him how it was all going to play out. I remember him as a palomino color.

Morning- don't worry Beth -get us going we will be fine! My first riding? I have a photo of me about 4? on a pony -thinking my bio-father (divorce situation) took me on a visit? See my temp avatar! can't be sure -but if so wouldn't Freud have a ball with this? LOL - anyway -always collected Bryer horses (my room had a shelf running around the side - i built "stalls" out of index cards, shavings of TP & halters from dental floss) My friend & I would go to the local (by 2 bus rides) stable to rent a horse several times a month -got my first horse at 29 as I was getting divorced - a present to myself!
Heading out in a bit to ride -loving this cooler mornings -hope the bugs stay away -tomorrow is my Upreach (therapeutic riding volunteer) then DH & I are heading to the beach for a few hours and of course a lobsta roll!
Amy - when is your next show? Beth- you should mention for newbies that we "refugees from WW 50's board -alot of us have "aged" out! LOL -Hence new title -"horse lovers!" Hoping to see some more of us here (judy, Libby)

Good morning, Love reading all your first ride stories! My first ride story is kind of a bummer, so I canceled the post I wrote out - I don't want to be the Debbie Downer of the thread It's a beautiful day here; hopefully you all are experiencing good weather, too to get some good saddle time in. I have a lesson on Friday, which I'm excited about. Hope everyone has a wonderful day!

Oh, ha! I'm sorry, I didn't mean to tantalize you all. It's really just a very silly story - My very first memory of riding was when I was 5, and my dad was leading me on our family horse in the paddock where we boarded him. He was a young horse, I think a year younger than me (that was the joke; I was the youngest in the family, but older than Shabah), so I hadn't been really allowed to ride him much, he (and I!) being so green. Well, he got too close to the fencing, and scraped and trapped my leg as I was being led. I panicked (because, Lordy-Lou, nobody was paying attention to the fact that I was getting injured, and we just kept on going!) and was reprimanded for potentially spooking him Not long after that (I was probably 5 1/2 or 6?), I was put on a different horse to trail ride with my dad, the barn owner, and other boarders. I was on El Dorado; a giant black bay, who I guess was supposed to be bomb-proof, and safer for me. Well, ol' El Dorado and I were in the back of the group, which he definitely did not enjoy, so he took off at a canter to get to the front of the pack. Well, I screamed bloody murder, and REALLY got in trouble! The upside is that now I take lessons (it still boggles my mind that these adults in the above situations didn't bother actually teaching me anything, yet let me go out on a trail!), and I know how to treat my own children (7 and 5) when they get to ride at the barn. So, my annoying start to horse-life was good for something!

With an opening like share your first stories... I cannot resist. I've lurked at your board for a few years, but as I have not ridden now for about 6 years, I didn't have much to add. But my story...
I do not recall my first ride, I'm told I was 2yrs old and that I was bitten by the bug quickly! I remember my first horse show at 4yr old in a Lead Line class and winning a ribbon (before they gave everyone ribbons). It's been a blessing and a curse my entire life, these gentle giants. I did 4H as a kid, all sort of disciplines and was successful there. In my late teens, I did Arab breed shows for a few years. Then the curse of having to pay the bills kicked in so I quit for several years. Got back into it in my early 30's riding dressage, again fairly successful. Again life kicked in and now I have a 3yr kid. But life is looking better in regards of some time, so I'm looking to get back into riding again. Not sure what direction, not sure it even matters. Just need to literally get back in the saddle.
Thanks for having this group!

Dutchwife you don't have to own a horse to post here. Just simply liking them is all that is needed. I don't own any anymore but I still love them. Join us often.
