I enjoyed the entire book -- I really loved it. I can see how the ending might look tied up too well, but while I was reading it I loved it quite a lot.
I'm also terrible at casting. I also never like the movie as much as the book... ok, and also I don't know any of the young actors nowadays either!!

I think it was all tied up nicely but maybe too nicely? that said I was happy with the ending and everyone finding an end to their own odyssey.
for casting I thought it might be a fun question but its hard LOL I have a few ideas. any ideas for adults?
Moses-- I choose Sladen Peltier a young indigenous actor who is Canadian Odie-- Iain Armitage from young sheldon
Albert-- Finn wolfhard from stranger things
Emmy-- alina Brace the young daughter in sweet Magnolias

Thanks fitin14 for leading the discussion. I enjoyed it. I was just “ok” with the ending. I felt the whole Julia/Black Witch thing was a bit unbelievable. And, the start a dress shop, be successful thing was a bit contrived. I agree with bernelli about casting. I thought I’d give it a shot and even googled 2022 child stars. Honestly, I didn’t know any of them. I would watch this if became a movie.

The problem with guessing at the casting of the main characters is they are all too young to be actors who are established and we'd know. I wonder who would be Julia, or the Black Witch, those are interesting roles. Or Eve. I tried Googling to see if there's a movie in the works, but couldn't find one.
I was fine with the ending. I do like how the author gave us a rundown on where everyone's life went after the end of the story, I usually find that interesting.

Day 1: Liked it, loved the characters, agree with the plot twists being both a bit much and yet frequently predictable, but still loved the characters enough to get past that.
Day 2: the faith healing makes me roll my eyes, but I did feel like Sister Eve was able to rationalize it in her head. That creep Sid, not so much. The Emmy stuff was a bit too woo even for me. But at least they didn't have everything turn out perfect because of her - the aunt still ended up in a wheelchair, Albert ended up dead in the war, Mose got a ball to the head, ending his pro career. But way at the end when Odie says something to the effect of maybe not everything happened *exactly* as described, maybe we can just call it all storytelling/coincidences with the things that were more near-misses (Odie's fall, the snakebite, Jack surviving the gunshot and then not hating them all).
Day 3: I agree that it was a decent description of the Depression as maybe a kid would have seen it. They wouldn't have been paying as much attention to some of the stuff adults would focus on, like you saw in The Four Winds (I agree that that was fabulous and gutting). And it gave a setting were people would be slightly less shocked to see kids without adults because there had to be way too much of that going around. The Residential Schools aspect seemed well-done as well (and horrifying).
Day 4: I figured out the Aunt Julia prostitute angle before he headed up to the attic, but wasn't suspecting the mom thing until about a page before that got revealed. The Witch knowing her from before annoyed.
Day 5: I liked the afterword, where we found out what happened, and that Mose did in fact make it to the majors (and with my beloved Cardinals! Ha!) and married that sweet girl who had the passing scene early in the book. I was sad about how Albert died, but it made sense. I wanted to know at least a tiny bit more about how Odie got back to his girl but am glad we didn't get chapters and chapters on their adult lives. I was most happy that the kids all stayed the family that they had become, even if they weren't all living near each other anymore. I'm glad his aunt survived the fall but agree with the others that her future became somewhat eye-rolly.
No clue on casting the kids, other than maybe the girl from Prey could be Mose's future wife. She rocked.
Sister Eve: I feel like Jennifer Lawrence could pull this off and is about the age I'd picture her Aunt Julia: Tatiana Maslany, because she can play ANYTHING (see Orphan Black, where she is believable in approximately 15 different clone roles) Evil Witch: Angelina Jolie, maybe?
I've got nothing for any of the guys.
Glad I read it (mostly in the car today returning from a trip), but agree that Ordinary Grace was better.
