What’s on your mind — how to make kugel? This week’s Torah reading? Life goals? Prayer? We are all engaged in weight loss/weight maintenance journeys and we are all Jewish or at least interested in Judaism. We like to eat, we like to discuss. It is our goal here to provide each other support on our journeys, to share experiences, to call on our rich cultural heritage and texts, and to help each other grow spiritually.
Some of us take weekly turns starting the thread: Frieda Holly Lee Louise Lynne

Sometimes I wish there was something I could reliably do that would help me get on track each day. I’m always thinking maybe a prayer, maybe meditation, a mantra, doing my strength training. I think any of these things can help launch a day. The thing is about how steep the hill is that day – if your sure fire motivation takes more energy than you can muster, it won’t always serve you. Even IF aside, food is never the answer for me. A body in motion tends to stay in motion – we all know about that. So it's about overcoming the body at rest part! I think for some of us the alarm clock is enough to get us going. Most days I don’t actually have to get out early though and even if I do a zoom morning minyan I don’t have to do much more than brush my teeth and throw on a caftan. It doesn’t jumpstart my day.
What works for you?

In my bathroom, there's a shelf immediately over the sink. The wall behind that is a large wall mirror. I have some cards propped up on the shelf with sayings on them (motivational ones). I read them (actually, the print is large enough and I'm standing close enough that I can read most of them without having to put on my glasses first) every day. And it's a good beginning for me.
If you want to try it too, I suggest you spend some time thinking about what you really need to remind yourself of every day, like "Food is not [or never?] the answer" and/or other sentences or even phrases that may work for you. Choose sayings (or sentences) that do actually speak to you.
You can do this, Louise!

Lately, the extreme heat down here has contributed to a great deal of lethargy on my part. So this is a good topic for me.
My morning ritual, which I enjoy getting out of bed for, is going to my morning coffee shop. The background noise, my coffee, and the friendly banter with the regular patrons all give me some much needed energy. So perhaps one solution would be to come up with a morning routine you actually enjoy.
Another thing that has worked for me, in terms of exercise, is to put my exercise clothes (including tennis shoes with a pair of socks sitting on top, out on the chair near my bed. I do this the night before if I intend to get up and exercise or go for a walk. I find that if I have exercised, I feel like I have accomplished something that day!
And here is one other idea: new, really cushiony tennis shoes. There is something about wearing new, bouncy tennis shoes that actually makes me want to get up and go.
All that said, I have been known to just open my current novel upon waking up, and snuggle under the covers all morning. As Louise would say, that is never the answer. But I definitely retest that statement on occasion.

Good morning everybody. Hope you are all well and SAFE!
Re today's topic: I smile at myself in the bathroom mirror, no matter how messy I look. I wake DS up and often sing the "Good Morning!" song from "Singin' in the Rain" (with words changed). I have lots of rituals about balancing, standing, walking, and climbing up and down the stairs, too.
One thing about my health problems, especially my leg problems, is that I don't take getting around for granted. I say prayers --- a lot --- about movement. This helps me.
After breakfast, I look forward to checking out what's going on online with my friends. That gets me going cheerfully!
Have a peaceful day, Lee

I go to the gym on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 5 a.m., so I can get in a good workout (cardio + weight training), come home and shower, and be at my desk at 7 a.m. I love the feeling I have all day of knowing that I've done something really good for myself. After work, I do about 30 minutes of stretches. I tried doing the stretches during my lunch break, but I really like having that time to relax and enjoy my lunch.
What motivates me to get up so early on those days? To tell you the truth, it's the yummy feeling I get on the OTHER days that I can stay in bed an hour longer and relish NOT getting up. Occasionally, I go to the gym on a Sunday instead of Monday, just so I can sleep later on Monday. Maybe it's just a mental manipulation, but it works for me.
I agree with Lynne about good, cushiony shoes. I go to the running store where DS32 used to go, when he was on the track/cross country teams in high school. It's worth every penny to have them evaluate my walk and posture, and fit me properly. And I lay out my gym clothes the night before also, so it's quick and easy to get going in the morning. I also bought myself a new Harry Potter water bottle - anything fun that gets me tuchus out the door!
