What’s on your mind — how to make kugel? This week’s Torah reading? Life goals? Prayer? We are all engaged in weight loss/weight maintenance journeys and we are all Jewish or at least interested in Judaism. We like to eat, we like to discuss. It is our goal here to provide each other support on our journeys, to share experiences, to call on our rich cultural heritage and texts, and to help each other grow spiritually.
Some of us take weekly turns starting the thread: Holly Lee Louise Lynne Peachy
And for those of you who stop by to read this thread without posting — you are welcome to, but you are also welcome to chime in. Don’t be shy!

I just answered yesterday's thread. It's not yet 6:30am in my part of the world. I'll come back in a little while to see about today's topic.

I often pause over this in our mahzor. It is from Hasidic master Shmelke of Nikolsberg, 18th c. Ukraine:
When a person commits a sin and does not turn in repentance, when that person forgets the sin, the Holy One remembers it. When a person fulfills a commandment by doing a good deed, and forgets about it, the Holy One remembers it. When a person commits a sin and later turns in repentance, remembering the sin, the Holy One grants atonement, and forgets the sin. When a person fulfills a commandment and is constantly filled with self-praise because of it, the Holy One forgets it.
What a person forgets, God remembers; what a person remembers, God forgets.
I think of this in several different ways. One is that we sometimes do not have a clear view of ourselves because we remember what we did wrong and forget what we did right (or, I guess for some, this is in reverse). We may lose track of ourselves, but God does not. How does this speak to you?

Good morning everybody. Hope you are all well and SAFE!
Re today's topic: Sometimes it's easy to remember what we did that was right and to forget what we did that was wrong. Nobody's perfect. I think that the quote puts a lot of pressure on us to try harder to be righteous.
Have a peaceful day, Lee

What this says to me is that God is exactly what we need God to be. God remembers when we should but don’t, forgets when we do something wrong for which we have repented, etc.
I especially like the one about the self-congratulatory person. That person’s good deeds need not be remembered by God.
I have t seen this teaching before ; thanks for referencing it!

Ditto what Louise said. And I had not heard this teaching either - thank you for sharing it!
I had to report for jury duty today, and now I'm exhausted. We're still in the jury selection process, so I have to go back tomorrow. I do want to serve on a jury; I've never had the experience, and I think it would be interesting. But it sure makes for a long day, and I'm pooped.
Holly, I saw what you posted on yesterday's thread. Kids astonish me with what they hear and remember. To me, that's one of the cool things about them!
