What’s on your mind — how to make kugel? This week’s Torah reading? Life goals? Prayer? We are all engaged in weight loss/weight maintenance journeys and we are all Jewish or at least interested in Judaism. We like to eat, we like to discuss. It is our goal here to provide each other support on our journeys, to share experiences, to call on our rich cultural heritage and texts, and to help each other grow spiritually.
Some of us take weekly turns starting the thread: Holly Lee Louise Lynne Peachy
And for those of you who stop by to read this thread without posting — you are welcome to, but you are also welcome to chime in. Don’t be shy!

For Friday I will be baking a new apple cake recipe from Smitten Kitchen that was recommended to me. Can hardly wait. Then I’m going over to the synagogue for some last minute tidying and checking. Whenever I can I will slide in some more drilling on my torah readings. I’m also leading ma’ariv the second night, a torah service, and a haftarah but I’m in pretty good shape for those. Just need to review the haftarah (have chanted it many times before).
In the afternoon I get to do my nails, shower, and so on – ME time! I wish I had something decent for dinner but I didn’t make it to the kosher market (and I’m not trying that tomorrow!). No big deal. Will be going to some friends on Saturday (which is when I get to taste my cake). They requested that people take a Covid test before coming as they both just got over another round of it, I actually had to buy some tests because all my free ones had expired (even with the extensions). We’re not requiring masks for services.
So how’s the holiday shaping up for you? Lots of cooking? Company? Studying?
Shana Tova my friends. I wish you all good things in the coming year. My thoughts are with Frieda – I was originally going to write that I hope the MRI fiasco was resolved and that she is on the road to recovery, but there's more to say because I just read her post on Thursday's thread. OMG! She is in rare form. With all that is going on she sounds absolutely great - if you haven't read her post, please go back and read it.
L’shana tova tikateyvu!

"Flowers are nice, but cheesecake tastes better!" Have truer words ever been spoken? Frieda, you nailed it!
I learned only a few days ago that I'm reading Torah on Yom Kippur afternoon (only the first aliyah). It's from the week I was born plus it was also my bat mitzvah parashah, and I've read it on Shabbat K'doshim in the past, so it won't be difficult to get up to speed on it. However, I'm still looking for three or four more people to volunteer (that is, to agree to my request) to read Torah in the morning service for Yom Kippur.
Yes, I'm the person who rounds up Torah readers all year at my congregation; however, we don't have more than one Shabbat morning service each month (unless we have b.mitzvah students with dates in the same month). (That's one of the reasons I attend Shabbat morning services elsewhere.) As a result, getting readers for High Holy Days is harder than at synagogues with services every week. And it's also why I'm on the lists of other synagogues that have weekly Shabbat morning services... (My shul's Rosh haShanah Torah services took care of themselves, in case you're wondering why I mentioned the Torah readers for only Yom Kippur.)

Shana Tova all! May it be a year of health and happiness for us all!
To my friends on this thread who are reading Torah: I know you’ll do great! As I learned recently while watching the US Open, Billie Jean King once said: Pressure is a Privilege. (Think about it!)
Frieda, enjoy every bite of your cheesecake!
We are shul going and seeing friends all weekend.
I’ll be posting on Sunday (second day of RH), and will see (some of you ) then.

Good morning everyone, and thank you for an interesting week, Louise! I read Frieda's post from last night. Frieda, I'll be thinking of you, and I'm wishing you all the best. Definitely go with the cheesecake!
Pressure is a privilege? That's a good way to put it. I do feel honored to be asked to read Torah on Rosh Hashanah. Luckily for me, I've done this reading many times and feel fine about it. I read the fourth reading on the first day, which is the sixth reading tomorrow, since it's Shabbat. For many years, I read on the second day as well, but someone else stepped up for that a few years ago, so I'm off the hook on Sunday.
I wish you all a year of goodness, strength, good health and peace. Shabbat shalom!

Good afternoon everybody! Hope you are all well and SAFE!
I've been super busy; I apologize for skipping some posts. The good news is that I saw a new orthopedist at my primary doctor's urging, and he said that my elbow has nothing serious wrong with it. He recommended an anti-inflammatory and an antibiotic, which I started taking. Psychologically, I feel much better; physically, I am glad I am on the mend.
Here's wishing all of our group a happy and healthy new year!!
Have a peaceful day, weekend, year, etc.!!, Lee
