What’s on your mind — how to make kugel? This week’s Torah reading? Life goals? Prayer? We are all engaged in weight loss/weight maintenance journeys and we are all Jewish or at least interested in Judaism. We like to eat, we like to discuss. It is our goal here to provide each other support on our journeys, to share experiences, to call on our rich cultural heritage and texts, and to help each other grow spiritually.
Some of us take weekly turns starting the thread: Holly Lee Louise Lynne Peachy
And for those of you who stop by to read this thread without posting — you are welcome to, but you are also welcome to chime in. Don’t be shy!

Hi everyone, Well yesterday we talked about death, and by Wednesday we will be getting serious about the very serious holiday of Yom Kippur. So, perhaps today we will take a break and discuss something equally weighty:
Does anyone really LIKE apples dipped in honey? Personally, I am very meh about the flavor of honey, and adding it to a slice of pre-cut apple doesn’t really improve it, as far as I am concerned.
I do, however, love any dessert with apples in it. Louise sent me to a recipe for an apple cake that looks delicious. What’s your favorite apple variety ? And/or, what is your favorite apple dessert?
Oh damn, I just got hungry….

I do like apples dipped in honey! I like any apple that is crisp and crunchy, not mealy or mushy. OTOH, I don't much care for apple baked goods, even apple pie. I realize I am a weirdo in this area!

No, Peachy, not a weirdo at all. I don't care for pie in general (ditto for cake). I too prefer crisp and crunchy for apples, and intensely dislike mealy and/or mushy. My favorite variety is Honeycrisp but I will not pay $3/lb for apples! If they're not on sale for a reasonable price, they don't find their way into my home. My second favorite is Fuji. When I was growing up (on the east coast), my favorite was MacIntosh; however, the few times I've tried them while living in San Diego, they were terrible: completely mealy (although not really mushy). I gave up on them. My DS, who doesn't care all that much for apples, found another variety some years ago (while in New York City); if/when I remember its name, I'll be back to edit this post. I figure when someone doesn't like apples and raves about one kind she found, it's gotta be worth pursuing...

Good morning everybody. Hope you are all well and SAFE! Happy Talk Like A Pirate Day, if you're celebrating (ARR!).
Re today's topic: I like apples (most types as long as they're crunchy); plain, in pie or cake, or dipped in honey or cinnamon (my Scrabble friend introduced me to these). I do have to be in the right mood for them though, as there are many other fruits I like better.
I don't have a particular favorite type; I like too many to list. I think my favorite way of preparing them is DH's homemade apple pie. We have a terrific peeler that I got at BB&B before they went out of business and their local store closed. He uses Granny Smith apples in the pie, plus sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. We get the spices from Penzeys (Yay Penzeys!).
Thanks for the reminder to buy apples, and have a peaceful day, Lee

I love apples most way. I do dip a piece of apple into honey but that is all about the symbols - would just as soon eat the apple plain. Not a fan of sour apples so I don't like Granny Smiths. The apple cake I made for RH was maybe the best thing I ever baked! I used honey crisps for that. I tend to buy bags of smallish apples in the supermarket - good snack size. I often buy gala and fuji apples, honey crisps too. I like cooked apples too and when I'm being good to myself in the winter will make baked apples - it's easy to do (I just don't do it). For that I use rome or cortlandt because these tend to hold up well to cooking.
