What’s on your mind — how to make kugel? This week’s Torah reading? Life goals? Prayer? We are all engaged in weight loss/weight maintenance journeys and we are all Jewish or at least interested in Judaism. We like to eat, we like to discuss. It is our goal here to provide each other support on our journeys, to share experiences, to call on our rich cultural heritage and texts, and to help each other grow spiritually.
Some of us take weekly turns starting the thread: Frieda (hopefully)? Holly Lee Louise Lynne Peachy
And for those of you that stop by to read this thread without posting — you are welcome to, but you are also welcome to chime in. Don’t be shy!

I have done zero holiday cooking or baking. We bought frozen latkes this year, which were delicious. Our work holiday party is tomorrow afternoon, via Teams, and we're supposed to bake cookies, but that's too much of a trigger situation for me, so I'm not doing it. I plan to attend long enough for my boss to see me, then I'll quietly bow out.

Good afternoon everybody!! Hope you are all well and SAFE! Please pray for Israel. louise, Thanks for starting us out, and peachymom1, and gazelle18, thanks for posting. Please come back later to comment --- here comes today's topic! Today's topic: Surprises!! What's something surprising that has happened for you recently (something good, please)? How do you feel about it and what are you doing? For me, this whole weekend has been full of surprises. 1. For those who have been following my family's medication saga, DH got an email in the middle of the night saying that his meds were being processed (despite all the hassles we had with his order). I am SO glad, and hope they arrive before he runs out. 2. DH left this morning for a few days in Williamsburg for work. He'll be back Tuesday night. He was nice, and made gingerbread cookies early this morning before leaving. They are good! 3. We are getting a new stove!! Our old one (over ten years old) has been heating up very slowly, so DH decided we should call a repairperson. I called a company that had worked for us before, and surprisingly, they had an opening yesterday afternoon. The repairman looked at it, and said that the problem was the control panel ($$$). DH and I decided to go ahead and buy a new stove. I'm delighted, and hope it works well. DH went online, and found one recommended by Consumer Reports on sale for practically half price (!), so he ordered it. 4. The stove will be delivered on Wednesday. Since I will be the one at home when it's delivered, I of course wanted to know when. Via chat, I was able to arrange that they would call me Tuesday night with a 4-hour window for Wednesday, and also call a half hour before they arrive. I feel comfortable with that. So you see, this has been a weekend for surprises! I feel very good and capable. I will miss DH, but DS and I will have fun together while he is away, and plan on ordering a pizza tomorrow (DH doesn't like delivery pizza). Have a peaceful rest of the day, Lee

My sister in Kentucky has just had a few very nice surprises. She and her DH didn't have medical insurance when she had emergency surgery for appendicitis, so they had a staggering hospital bill. She talked to someone at the hospital, who helped her apply for some financial assistance, and they were able to reduce the bill by 50%. Hooray!
That still left a considerable chunk of a bill, and some of us gave them some money to help, but then DBIL's father, who has been estranged from him for some time, gave them a large check last week, completely out of the blue. It's enough to pay off the remainder of the hospital bill and provide for a nice Christmas for them too. I'm sure DBIL's DF heard about their financial situation through the family grapevine, and this was his way of helping and reaching out at the same time. Good on him. I'm very happy for my sister and DBIL that the financial issue is solved, but I'm particularly happy that DBIL is reconnecting with his dad. DBIL is a really nice guy, and this rift with his dad has been painful. I hope this means they will draw closer now.

I surprised myself with my decision to volunteer in Israel. And I surprised myself with my baking today in thatit wasn't as bad as it could have been. These are mini cupcakes with a zillion ingredients including several kinds of dried fruit, toasted nuts, choch chips and coconut. The ingredients all call me. I did have some of everything as I mixed things in. Then I dumped the remaining chips and coconut into the garbage. If I have trouble with the dried fruits and nuts will do the same with them but I think I can count and measure those okay. Had 2 mini cupcake gems. I hope to get the rest into tins or whatever packaging for giving to people. One tin goes in the mail tomorrow, one to my landlady, one to my hairsylist. I will decide what to do with any others left beyond those but I'm done for the day (They glaze is hardening on them on the counter and I don't hear them calling me any more).
I'm hopi ng 15 poi nts covers it. Done.
