What’s on your mind — how to make kugel? This week’s Torah reading? Life goals? Prayer? We are all engaged in weight loss/weight maintenance journeys and we are all Jewish or at least interested in Judaism. We like to eat, we like to discuss. It is our goal here to provide each other support on our journeys, to share experiences, to call on our rich cultural heritage and texts, and to help each other grow spiritually.
Some of us take weekly turns starting the thread:
Frieda (hopefully)? Holly Lee Louise Lynne Peachy
And for those of you that stop by to read this thread without posting — you are welcome to, but you are also welcome to chime in. Don’t be shy!

Hi everyone,
Well, today (Wednesday), I am having bunion surgery. Fortunately my bunion issue is only on one foot, so I will only have to do this once. I have wrestled with this decision for years, as it is elective surgery. Ultimately, I decided that the pain was interfering with my enjoyment of life to the extent that the surgery was worth it. I will be non-weight-bearing for weeks, and the recovery sounds kind of long and tedious. I'm trying to look on the bright side - I will finally have the chance to read, watch, and listen to stuff I haven't previously had the time for.
I'm interested in everyone else's strategy for dealing with enforced "quiet time," like surgery, colds/flu, injuries, etc. Would love some ideas and advice. Any good reads, TV/movies you have enjoyed lately? does anyone do audio books or podcasts?
NOTE; I DO PLAN TO POST AS USUAL FOR THURSDAY. IF I DO NOT, IT MAY BE BECAUSE I AM GROGGY OR OVER-SLEEPING. I HOPE SOMEONE WILL JUST OPEN US UP IF THAT DOES HAPPEN!

Good morning everybody. Hope you are all well and SAFE! Please pray for Israel. Re today's topic: gazelle18, I hope your surgery turns out successfully!! As for what I do when I need to rest, I like to watch movies. My favorite channels are Disney+ and TCM. I like animation (Disney+) and old movies (TCM). The latest movies I've seen that I enjoyed were: Lightyear (Buzz Lightyear's origin story), Elementals (a cute story about a planet where everyone is a basic element, and a fire-girl and a water-guy fall in love), Shaun the Sheep (a very cute British series of comedies), and a bunch of old movies on TCM (too many to list, but I love Bette Davis, Barbara Stanwyck, and many more). I enjoy the old Perry Mason shows (50's and 60's) and movies (80's); here they are on FETV. I also enjoy just sitting at the computer, and Googling up random ideas and seeing where they lead me. I like staring out the windows in my sunroom or kitchen and watching the birds. If I see a fox or deer, that is special. Those are some of my favorite things. I hope they are helpful! Get well soon!! Have a peaceful day everyone, Lee

Best of luck with the surgery, Lynne. You deserve to be without pain.
I too watch movies from TCM. My taste is a little different from Lee's. I prefer either comedies (sometimes light dramas) or complex caper movies (like The Italian Job from 2003). Recently, our satellite company offered HBO and another pay station for free for all of December (and as of yesterday, the stations were still free) and DH and I recorded lots of movies. Two I particularly enjoyed were Get Shorty and its sequel, Be Cool with a diverse cast (John Travolta, Gene Hackman, Danny DeVito, Rene Russo, Uma Thurman...). I loved both, especially being able to watch the first one made prior to watching the second one (we did them two days in a row). Some of my favorite movies are Victor/Victoria (Julie Andrews, James Garner, Robert Preston, Leslie Ann Warren...) and The Birdcage (Robin Williams, Nathan Lane, Hank Azaria, Gene Hackman, Dianne Weist, Christine Baranski...). Both of these are major comedies. When I'm alone, there are some old TV series I like to indulge in (DH doesn't) and there are plenty of stations from the satellite company that play reruns. In addition, I enjoy a lot of BBC shows including some of their mysteries (Sister Boniface being one from England, and Doctor Blake from Australia and I truly loved Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries (also from Australia) and DH likes/liked the first two and never liked the third of these mystery series. I'm currently enjoying Recipes for Love and Murder (set somewhere in South Africa; also a mystery show) and a few others. Explore! You're sure to find some gems of your own.

I stockpiled books, puzzle books and movies when I had surgery. I had way more than I needed, but that's the way I like it. :+) DH likes to listen to books on CD (well, now digital download), so those are fun too, even if I've already ready the book.
Good luck on your surgery! I'm thinking about you.

Refuah Shelamah for a successful surgery and swift and complete recovery When I had my knee done, I had lots of People magazines to read. I love most things on Netflix. If you have Hulu Only Murders In the Building is adorable. I'm easily entertained by things like My 600 Pound Life and 1000 Pound Sisters and 90 Day Fiance. Mindless trash. Lots of good movies available now too. Have you seen Barbie? It's excellent, and I never thought I'd say that. Hopefully you'll be able to get around on crutches maybe?

I hope the day went well and you are resting comfortably. I love to read and crochect so that is what I would be doing. Have you ever wanted to learn a language or a craft? This might be a good time for something like that. Hook a rug? Start an afghan? Any pants to hem? I have beeen off TV but if you have Netflix you'll probably want to see Maestro (Lenny Bersnstein story).
For now, sleep!
