This is an addition to what I posted last week about “The Hungry Brain” book. In that book, the obesity/neuroscience researcher author says that a Paleo-like diet - high protein, moderate carb - is very satiating for the brain. I am currently reading “Burn” by Herman Ponzer - about metabolism. This article is an interview with him on what Paleo diets are actually like - given his research on the Hadza in Tanzania and another hunter-gatherer tribe in South America. arstechnica.com/science/2022/10/our-ancestors-ate-a-paleo-diet-it-had-carbs/The interview reinforces what was in “The Hungry Brain” I’ll post what I learned from the “Burn” book when I finish it.

Hi, Warning: blomit ahead.
Last month was a whirlwind of Dr appts, shots, more appointments, some entitlement eating, some very healthy and mindful eating, and a successful WW LT WI for September. Oh, yeah, and f'ing Covid since Monday night.
Some things I am now wrestling with: My last bloodwork shows high potassium, tho all my kidney levels are good, so making some food choice changes. I am also hoping that it may be that I was dehydrated, since that can cause a spike and I'm working w adjusting hydration w the daily miralax I take now. Jonik has kindly given me some info about that.
My new PCP whom I just saw for the first time tells me my A1C # (that my prior PCP told me not to worry about for the last 4 years,) actually means I am pre-diabetic, so I need to watch my carbs. I had been trying to eat less meat, so had added more whole grains and definitely more beans to my meal plans, which now I think might not be such a great thing. I also managed to drop my cholesterol levels beautifully when I dropped the 30 lbs last year doing Beck, so I'm not quite sure why this wouldn't have dropped, too.
And right now I am trying to work veggies into my meals, but it's hard since I really only want easy, soft foods while I'm sick.
I'm not used to looking at things like net carbs. I try to stick w whole grains as much as possible, or light multigrain stuff, and I do look at sugar on labels. I eat brown rice, and whole wheat pasta, but not too often and generally loaded w veggies. I do plant protein tortillas, multi-grain wraps, or lite multi-grain English muffins, but generally only for one meal and not necessarily daily. I haven't had any booze since 8/31.
I'm not even sure what I'm looking for, other than maybe just a place to say I don't really have a clue how to try to manage all this.
And I know I should probably wait until I'm out from under the Covid, and then just do some research to find out how many grams of processed carbs I need to limit myself to on a daily basis to try to drop my numbers.
Ugh.
Credits: Trying to be mindful of getting protein and some veggies in while I'm sick. Drinking lots of water and resting to let my body do it's job healing. Thinking of ways to use up stuff in the veggie drawer that appeals to my sick-bay appetite. Have NOT fallen down the mac and cheese rabbit hole.

I hope you feel better soon, CynA1C is a rotating 3 month average. Or so I just learned from my doctor uncle and aunt who I visited last week. It is based on the life of the blood cells in your blood. From my perspective, and I'm not doing a green job but I need to get on with it, I try to avoid processed carbs and most of the multigrain breads etc. are processed. They don't contain that high a percentage of actual whole grains - I've found that white flour is higher up on the ingredient list on most of them. I try to only eat Ezekiel bread - the original in the orange wrapper and that too not often. Whole Foods like cooking your own grains and maybe switching to a grain bowl, vs using a wrap or bread, might be one option. Also, the body processes the inherent sugar in fruit the same as added sugar so cutting down on fruit might also help. Due to my allergies I don't eat much fruit. My problem is sugar and I'm trying to tame my sweet tooth in various ways. Still a work in progress. My SO eats Dave's Killer Bread and when I try it, I find it too sweet after my Ezekiel bread. eta: forgot to add my data for yesterday Credits: Read cards Logged food Used habit tracker Gave myself credit

Went for the walk yesterday. It wasn't a cardio exercise but a lot of clambering up and down small mounds in rough terrain, stepping over branches and dead logs, etc. And it took 3 hours. Otherwise good day. Went to bed on time and slept well.
Another piece of info I picked up from the Nutrition Diva podcast last week - in controlled studies, whey protein was found to be the most satiating. She defines satiation as how long something keeps you from getting hungry and satiety as how you feel right after you eat it. However, she also said that controlled studies are not life. So if you find another protein keeps you going longer because you enjoyed eating it (vs. an isolate powder mixed into a smoothie in the study), go for it. For vegans, soy and pea were the most satiating.

Hi, Muddling along. Keeping up, however minimally, with my fitness challenge. Listening to my body in terms of lots of resting for healing. Trying to keep up with drinking lots of fluids. Trying to get some roughage/fiber in at least one meal, even though I mostly want soup/soft foods. Tracking.

Better day yesterday. I was very tired (from flu shot?) so I napped all afternoon and went to bed on time. Today I have to get out into the garden because we have two warm days. I'll see if exercise fits in or if the garden work is the exercise.

Another day when I was running around and not exercising. I am teaching at the NY State Sheep and Wool festival from 10/14-10/16. These are classes I proposed and prepared in 2020 and decided not to teach in 2020 and 2021. So I have to familiarize myself with what I'd planned plus do the usual prep of getting all the materials and handouts together. That is proving to be more work than I had thought it would be. Plus, the weather is warm for two days so I'm cramming gardening stuff in. My day is a mix of sitting on my butt and running around!
