I am not looking forward to this last bit of winter. I have a friend who is a teacher who is looking forward to snow days so it is nice that someone is happy.
I am thinking of trying a new bit. Not a big change just a copper bean joining the middle, still a D ring. He is in a D ring snaffle right now with one joint in the middle. I am kind of doing this on my own. I love my trainers but I just want to try something on my own. Sometimes I get tired of being told what to do all the time if that makes sense. If it doesn't work out the bit is around $30 so no big loss. Faye- looks like you are going to get a good amount of snow too. stay safe. Beth- I hope DH feels better soon, it sounds like spring break came at the right time. Cathy- Your cat and I have something in common! I just had a bunch of wax taken out of my right ear. I can hear better. Barb- maybe I was wrong thinking I would buy one horse and just keep it forever. I have a friend my age who did that so I guess I thought that would be me too. Most people have multiples I am finding out. I really like Lukas though so I hope I have him a long time. Libby- hope the kitchen work goes a smooth as possible. Dutch- Hi!
Have to get to work! HAGD Amy

Good Morning -Faye- thanks for getting us going - like you -we are gearing up for "the BIG one" - stay safe -I have pretty much all I will need so no grocery store for me today! We will load up 3 sets of hay nets to cover the next few days -we usually only do nets for dinner but if wet out we like them to have nets in the shed at breakfast as well -we will set up for dinner tonight -both meals tomorrow & breakfast Wednesday -luckily we have 3 sets of small hole nets & 2 of regular which will do in a pinch!
Amy -when I was showing I had many different bits depending on what the trainer's preference was! When I was doing H/J it was a pelham w/ martingales -(hated the double reins -don't think they use them much any more?) When I did dressage w/ this one trainer who was a follower of Robert Fullmer I had a Fullmer bit -basically a full cheek snaffle but the joints had a separate connection so as not to pinch the horse in the mouth. And of course various full cheek, D-ring snaffles. I have been using the Dr Cook's bitless bridle for almost 15 years now -first on Aaron & then Penny. (When I got her I did use a snaffle as that is what they had used on her -after about 3 weeks I decided to try Aaron's bitless and never went back!) Of course for competition you can't use them (i don't think)
Beth - hope you & DH can finally shake this cold thing -it has been hanging on -Libby -how are the ponies doing? behaving? (or at least Rosie!?) Cathy -you haven't mentioned painting in a while -what are you working on these days? Dutch- don't know if you mentioned (CRS) who will take care of Allie while you are gone? How long are you gone for?
Tooth that we have been watching is acting up again -started last night -going to try to hold out a day or so to see if it subsides again -and due to storm -but will most likely call dentist on Thursday if not better.
keep warm & safe for those in the path of this mess - waving to all - HAGD - CBL

Good morning. It's raining here for most of the day. Nothing bad though. March and April usually is our biggest tornado months but so far just rain.
DH went to the dr this morning. He's been worse than me. His head cold is turning into bronchitis again. Mine's just a head cold with the congestion today. The sore throat part isn't as sore this morning.
I don't like time change. I wish it was the same standard time all the time.

Hi, all!
Faye, glad you had a good time with DD. I'm assuming she's made it home OK before the storm! I'll look up the other accompaniment as well. Beth, what is going on with you two? Are you just sharing the same germs back and forth? Could it be allergies that are bothering you, sometimes they mimic colds. I hope your DH gets some help...we want you both healthy! Barb, it's funny (well, not) about your DH. We all pick our priorities...chips versus a healthy dinner with friends. Hope things have smoothed abit. Sounds like you're prepared for the storms as well! Libby, yikes...horses and termites, not good for wood! Hope you find something that works. Is he bored? How is the temp kitchen coming along? Amy, nothing wrong with trying new things yourself...I think it's easier than it used to be because of web access. Like Barb, I used to have bits that trainers liked, all the way from Pelhams to eggbutt snaffles. It's funny how trainers hold on to specific ones, even though the horse could probably use something "nicer". Dutch, hope things are well.
Didn't get much done yesterday, still struggling with unhappy gut. Never was nauseous so while hungry, every thing I ate had an uncomfortable impact. Stuck with bananas and oatmeal, then finally had some eggs for dinner. Seems better today.
May try swimming today, we'll see how things go. Haven't formally exercised since Thursday.
BTW: From Judy, now Steve is having back issues and has to go to the doctor. It's like everything is all coming apart. Charlotte still won't eat (I gave her some things that worked for my cat) but if you have any suggestions, feel free to let her know. I'm not sure when they get the blood work back; i'm hoping soon.
Cathy

Hello beautiful people! I hope you live far from the fires. And to those near the Nor'Easter and the other yucky weather - stay warm, dry and safe! I played with Ally a bit yesterday. Pulled the blanket off for the season. It was nice out yesterday. So I leave Wednesday. I'm more than ready mentally, but otherwise not so much! lol Normal. I'm well practiced at packing, so I'm not really worried. I just want to teleport there like RIGHT NOW! ha! Yes, I'm excited!

Faye - you probably are right and may be able to say "I told you so!" but I'm going to stick it out until at least Wednesday -see if it calms down. I cleaned up 4 barrels full of hay & manure -made me feel good even though by tomorrow..... One full load from the area behind the shed where they stuff the breakfast nets that are attached to the fence. I was able to scoop up enough good hay to fill both nets to the brim! When I stopped by around 1:30 they were empty! Switched Penny's blanket to medium weight -threw more hay & they are set for now -
Yes, DH & I have moved on -he's doing AARP taxes today so I have the house to myself -I really enjoy it as it is very rare these days! I love DH but.....sometimes......

BARB-what's the old saying " I promised to love and honor but not to do lunch!" hope the tooth stays happy. I actually have a tooth that can tell when the weather changes. (ok, it's by a sinus so it feels the pressure---) Stay warm and safe. the four-leggeds, too BETH-hope DH can get better soon. glad he's on spring break. CATHY-sorry you are having tummy issues. Fee l better.Chanter is in Kim Robertson's Celtic solos (purple cover). DUTCH-have a wonderful trip. how long are you going? LIBBY-have a good day. HOpe DS enjoys bowling. AMY-don't know anything about bits, but your horse, your choice to try in my humble opinion
we are in the 18-24 inch range. Harp show Wednesday night cancelled (i'm fine with that. they say snow showers Wednesday and it's usually an older audience so no one probably will come; I have a show Friday so will be able to play most of the tunes )
waving to all. HAGD

Good morning
it's Pi day. and snowing on the east coast. (they downgraded the accumulation to about 18" but winds can be 50 mph later so still a blizzard ).
BARB-how's it by you? BETH-how is DH? how are you? DUTCH-have a great trip. airports closed here today. AMY-did you get your new bit? what do you think will be the difference with it? I know nothing about bits. Dorito used a D ring and sometimes we used a martingale, but that's all I know. CATHY-any news from Judy about Charlotte? I messaged but so far nothing. did you swim? What ever happened with your glasses? LIBBY-what happens if the horse (sorry forgot his name) keeps eating your barn? did you put electric tape up? is that possible or just for a fence?
waving to all. Already washed floors. snow seems to be picking up and it started at 10 PM. going to be a long day.

Morning- Faye- depending on which station we watch - 12-18" - and you washed the floors? Impressive! I was going to do the kitchen yesterday (it does need it ) but since it opens to the deck & backyard -where Tundra goes out -figured why do it now -wait till snow is done- sounds good anyway!
Dee is picking me up in a few -(she goes right by my house & has a big pickup truck!) so we can clean & get them hayed in!
Waving to all - HAGD - stay safe & warm - CBL

Hi All,
It is a day off work but can't get to the barn, sigh. I am going to order that bit on line so it will be a little while before I can really try it. I am thinking it may make it easier to get Lukas on the bit. I was reading reviews on line and riders who do what I do are using it and like it. It is not that much different then the bit he has now and it has "hunter" as part of the name so I can't be too far off, right? The only concern I have is he can really get his adrenaline up when jumping so will it be enough to "hold" him when needed. (he is in a snaffle with one joint now so it is not a severe bit now so I should be ok). The copper center is supposed to be something they like so it may be a little distraction in a good way when we are doing flat work. I am going to use it with my old bridle at first and keep the original snaffle on my new bridle for lessons.
Faye- sorry your performance was canceled when you did so much to prepare, I am glad you have another one.
Beth- It has been a very long winter for you and DH! I hope you can get out of this cycle of illness soon. "losing" an hour of sleep is annoying but riding after work last night I was happy with the extra hour of sunlight.
Dutch- I am excited for you and DS. I hope you have a great time. Looking forward to hearing all about it when you return.
Barb- sounds like you are well prepared for the weather. It is true that different trainers have their favorites when it comes to bits or anything else. I guess that is the good part of riding with different trainers you can find out what works best for you and your horse, taking a little from each of the trainers. My two trainers are fairly similar which is why they get along so well but they focus on different things so the combo is good.
Libby- hang in there, at some point the kitchen will be done and you will be settled in to your new updated space.
Cathy- when are you and your fellow harp player getting together. Do you want to agree on music and practice on your own first? Hope kitty is doing better.
I am off to shovel the steps for exercise and to keep up with the accumulation.
HAGD Amy

DUTCH-have a great trip. airports closed here today. Thank you! We have a non-stop... Portland, OR to Amsterdam. I considered non-stop partly due to weather, and then risk of lost luggage, flight delays, and it would have been a 24hr experience vs. 10.... So I already said I left the blanket off Ally for the season. But I can tell she's not used to her back being wet. My evil side is chuckling a bit. It is in the mid-50's here... so not totally cold. Take care all!

Rode Lucy Sunday night, she is over her lameness Thanks to my brother w/o a huge vet bill! I walked and trotted her around, she is the type of horse you can not ride for months and jump on her and she's just the same Barrel series is Tuesday evenings starting in June, dgd, 11 yo wants to ride Lucy in the barrels. She has cantered a few times, I think just taking it slow would be really good for both of them I set up large cones and walked and trotted her around them, she seemed to catch on to the pattern quickly. Dutch; have a great trip! I leave next Monday to AZ Cathy; hope Judie's cat pulls out of it! did you get to swim? Faye; glad things got postponed, it's a lot safer Barb; nice your friend can pick you up Beth; glad dh went to the doctors! You take care of yourself! Amy; sorry you can't get to the barn. I bought a jointed snaffle, it's a lot softer bit than I've been using, it's supposed to be here tomorrow! HAGD everyone!

Good late morning. Both DH and I are feeling better. We both were able to get a good night's sleep. The weather is cold and damp here so we're staying in the house and staying warm.
Dutch-have a great trip and we expect to hear all about it when you get back.
All of you getting snow...stay safe and warm.
Waving to the rest of y'all.

Hi, all!
Beth, so glad DH got the help he needed when he got it! Pneumonia isn't some to fuss around with! Faye, sorry about the cancellation but at least they care enough to cancel things due to possible weather. I'll see if I can find Kim's book. Thanks! Good on you for cleaning the floors! Barb, hope you do OK with the weather as well. Nice that you and Dee are taking care of the ponies. But there is a barn manager, right? Is he gone or are you just doing additional checking? Libby, how fun if your dgd rode Lucy in a barrel competition (I get that it's beginners but still so fun!). Amy, I hope you stay safe in the weather as well...I'm assuming you'll be careful sweeping the steps! Dutch, oooo...vacation time!!!
I did swim yesterday. Lots of people changing swimming lanes but I stayed where I was, just wanted to get done and get on with things. Whatever...
I signed up for another watercolor workshop with my old teacher. It will be an intermediate class...I've totally stalled and I think it's because I can't figure out what to do. I have played with the picture of my brother but I think I'm so worried about messing it up I can't get started. Maybe the class will help, early April.
I haven't heard from Judy today so kind of worried. Yesterday Charlotte wouldn't eat so I think Judy was trying to force-feed. I didn't hear whether her DH got in to see the doc or not. Last vet said maybe pancreatitis but I still don't think they know what's going on. Poor Judy...

Judy's; update is that Charlotte is home & doing somewhat better -eating (by hand) and drinking -so hoping she's turned the corner.
The wind has started whipping up a bit -when we got to the barn both horses were outside even though they had breakfast hay in the shed! I swapped out her blanket (she was dry underneath) because I can (!) we put hay in the outside nets and left the inside ones -hopefully at some time they will move inside.
I went thru all my "extra" stuff for a tack sale my horse group is having next month -I don't have a lot of stuff - am sharing a table with the other woman at the barn (not Dee) she has a ton of stuff -just hope she gets her act together & tags the stuff.

Hi all, we have cleared snow twice but it keeps coming down, they predict it will stop around 9 pm.
Libby I went back to last weeks thread because I thought I had missed something so I saw your post about Rosie. It is hard to break habits for sure. You are right though if you start getting mad very little good will come out of it. It is better to switch to something you know you will have success with and end on a good note like you did. My winter trainer suggests having one ride a week that is relaxing for both me and Lukas. This way every time I show up it doesn't mean only hard work. A nice walk around the farm when weather permits is the best. For you I guess a pleasant trail ride. When I was having so much frustration with head set my trainer said to not work on it or even think about it for a week. Now I am back to working on it and feel much more relaxed about the whole thing. New things take time. Good Luck.

good morning all- the snow finally stopped -we wound up with about 14" -but the last bit was wet & heavy -so this morning it was kind of frozen over -just finished the 4th shoveling of the deck hoping the sun will melt the residual! DH out snow blowing the drive also 4th time. So much for spring! My tooth seems to have calmed down this morning -may try to wait it out a bit more - I do know there is a root canal in my future -just trying to hold off a bit longer.
Amy - yes sometimes it's best to take a step back (baby steps) and regroup. You have lots of time to work w/ Lukas -try to remember that you didn't get that way with Gio overnight! Hang tough!
Faye- hope you guys all survived with no issues -Cathy -the new painting sounds interesting -a person rather than things!
Dutch - safe travels -have a blast -
Libby -hope you can work out something for Rosie for while you are away -and of course the other ponies as well!
Beth - glad you & DH are doing better - have you started on the new order?
DDIL in is town for business & family - they do a BIG St Patty's day thing in the town where most of the extended family lives -about 2 hours from here -they always invite us (parade +) but we pass -too cold and crazy! I'm supposed to have lunch with her either today or tomorrow (she always makes time for me when she is in town)
Waving to all - HAGD

Hi All, Staying home again today. Lightly snowing at the barn but the high winds are causing big drifts so the road to the barn keeps getting covered over as well as the driveway. Lukas is out and being well taken care of so I don't "need" to go out. I am happy he is not stuck in his stall all day. He has a run in shed if he wants but horses are much happier out if they can be out. He will be in overnight. This weather has me a little down but I am sure that is true of everyone. Spring will be welcomed with open arms. Beth, I am glad DH is feeling well enough to go to choir practice. Just remind him about lots of hand washing so he doesn't pick up the next "thing" while his immune system is low. Most men are pretty bad about that stuff. yours could be the exception. Barb If you know for sure from the dentist that the tooth needs a Root Canal Therapy it is better to have it done when you are not in pain. Pain equals infection, so your body will have that to deal with on top of the RCT procedure. Better chance of a successful outcome from the start if there is no or little infection. The infection creates gas and puss which is trapped and builds up pressure which causes pain. Also, the sooner you do it the better chance of saving the tooth which is a very good thing. Sorry I know you didn't ask but I hate to see a friend wait and the problem to get bigger. Faye are you out and about? Hi to Faye, Cathy, Libby and Dutch! HAGD Amy
